Paynter drafter in for Haiti challenge

the Bermuda national squad in their final build-up for next week's World Cup second-leg tie away to Haiti.

A centre-half with the team during their tour of Canada last summer, Paynter will probably be used as a midfielder against Haiti as national team manager Gary Darrell is expected to revert to a 4-4-2 formation rather than the more attacking 4-3-3 used against Haiti here on April 26.

Paynter slipped quietly into the island yesterday and reported immediately for squad training at National Stadium.

And there seems to be a good chance the Old Dominion University student will be in Darrell's starting line-up in Haiti.

"It's possible that we will be looking to play a 4-4-2 formation with Paynter in one of the midfield spots similar to how we have used Kentoine Jennings.

But exactly what his role will be is difficult to say right now,'' said Darrell.

Even though Paynter is a top-rated defender, Darrell defintely does not intend to use him in his customary centre-half position since Leroy Stevens and Shawn Smith have secured the two spots after a string of impressive peformances.

With Bermuda going to Haiti holding a 1-0 edge, Darrell reckons the strength of the Bermuda team will be enhanced considerably with the addition of experienced defenders Paynter, Jennings and skipper Meschach Wade operating in the middle.

While the makeup of the midfield suggests that Bermuda could be somewhat defensive, Darrell emphasised that Wade and Paynter had the ability to attack and that he Paynter, in particular, to be a factor when it came to dealing with high crosses.

He didn't rule out the possibility of bringing in Albert Caisey at left back and putting Voorhees Astwood in the middle where he also has a choice of using stalwart Kenny Thompson and Elliott Jennings for the one remaining spot.

"There is a number of ways we can go, we will just have wait and see,'' said Darrell.

The two-man attack picks itself with the Rotherham United professional Shawn Goater and PHC's Kyle Lightbourne spearheading the team.

Meanwhile, Darrell was set to select the travelling party for Haiti after last night's training session.
