Pennsylvania team truly elite
silverware when they won the under-14 division final of the Bermuda Youth Soccer Cup, beating North Village 3-1 at National Stadium last night.
The Pennsylvania club proved a class above their opponents as they were able to surgically dissect them with precision passing and deft footwork on and off the ball.
Village were constantly at odds to impede the progress of the visitors, although they received a glimmer of hope when midfielder Kuma Smith drew them to within a goal -- 2-1 -- 16 minutes into the second half.
Smith dribbled the ball from near midfield before thundering home a rising shot from 25 yards that Elite goalkeeper Jeff Angelucci could only help across the line.
However, this was merely an anomaly in a match that Elite controlled from start to finish.
Livewire winger Ray Destephanis was a constant thorn in the side of his foes, torturing them with some tantalising runs along the right flank.
He struck for two goals early in the second half before leaving it to centre-back Josh Viel to close things out with a rifled 35-yard freekick which Anthony Swan was helpless to stop.
Still it was Destephanis who claimed the spotlight, linking with fellow frontrunners Taj Reid and Brad Buzby to cause more than a few anxious moments among the Village defence.
Also lending valuable support was midfielder Don Harbison, while Angelucci -- aside from the one goal allowed -- was immaculate between the `sticks'.
A greatful Elite coach Patrick Reid sang his side's praises after the match.
"My team played remarkably well and really rose to the occasion,'' he said.
"We're excited to be involved in the Lanzera tournament.
"Being here in Bermuda is an added bonus.
"The support has been tremendous...it's almost like being at home.'' Meanwhile, overtime was required to decide the under-19 final that pitted Somerset against arch rivals PHC.
The score stood deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time, but guest player Ascento Russell popped up to seal a 3-2 result in favour of Somerset with a goal in the first period of extra time.
Russell benefitted from the determined efforts of strike partner Stevie Burrows, who snaked his way past defender Damon Francis to send in the perfect cross for the lanky Russell to nod over the line.
Earlier it was PHC manhandling the young Trojans, pinning them in defence for long spells. Tokia Russell in particular caused headaches with his array of ball skills and mazy runs along either flank.
Despite this the Zebras twice were forced to come back from a goal down as Kwame Tucker opened the scoring for Somerset in the 11th minute only to have teammate Rudolph Butterfield score an own goal 20 minutes later to even things up.
Russell put Somerset ahead again midway through the second half before a screaming half-volley by Dejeuntary Darrell levelled it a 2-2.
The under-12 final saw North Village defeat Devonshire Colts 1-0 on a strike by Travis Wilkerson, however Colts returned the favour in the under-14 final as they blasted the young Red Devils 4-1 with Damon Ming netting a hat-trick and Nasir Maynard converting the other. Kareem Hollis was the scorer for Village.
