PHC toast super-sub Wilson: Zebras gallop into final
Vasco 0 PHC 1 Alliance Division player Duval Wilson was the toast of PHC last night when his first goal for the first team helped them beat defending Dudley Eve champions Vasco at Somerset.
Wilson had only been on the field for two minutes when he produced a clinical piece of finishing in the 78th minute to settle this semi-final and carry PHC into their eighth Dudley Eve final where they will meet Devonshire Colts over two legs on Sunday and next Wednesday.
With time ticking away, Wilson met a cross and lobbed the ball first time over the advancing Timmy Figureido from just outside the penalty area.
Before then it was anybody's game as the chances came in abundance at both ends. Referee Stuart Crockwell was kept busy with his yellow card, booking six players -- Vasco's Steven Arorash and Earl Richardson and PHC's Desmond Burgess and Winston Trott in the first half and two more Vasco players, Kentoine Jennings and Dwight Basden in the second half.
After a slow start the game came to life midway through the first half when a 20th minute move by PHC nearly broke the deadlock. The chance came when Otis Steede forced a corner on the right side.
Figureido missed the high cross at the far post and after the ball had been knocked about in the penalty area, and calls for a handball were ignored, college student Tokia Russell had his shot blocked on the line.
Then from a quick break Winston Trott was put clear by Russell and his cross to the far post produced a shot from the veteran Brian (Bulla) Anderson which went just over the bar.
Vasco's best effort during that period was a shot from Dwight Basden which was deflected for a corner. But a minute later the Zebras were back on top with captain Sheridan Ming this time setting up Trott.
However, from eight yards he put a low shot just wide with Figureido expecting to at least have to make a save.
After the 12th minute booking of PHC's Burgess, Arorash and then Trott were also booked for fouls late in the half. Trott and Steede sandwiched Richardson in a tackle and the Vasco captain retaliated, only to be shown the card for ungentlemanly conduct.
The bookings continued in the second half with Jennings, starting the match in midfield, cautioned for pulling back Brian Anderson.
Jennings was involved in many of Vasco's attacking moves and in the 54th minute he went close to breaking the deadlock when he had a shot blocked inside the six yard box and then headed the rebound over the bar.
PHC made a couple of substitutions, bringing Raynel Lightbourne on for Sheridan Ming and then Wilson for the tiring Trott.
A strong run down the left flank by Russell resulted in a short pass for Lightbourne who turned and hooked a shot over the bar.
But it was PHC's other sub, Wilson, who was to find the net, after Russell supplied the cross to put Wilson clear of the Vasco defence. Figureido was helpless as the first time lob cleared him and went into the empty goal from about 20 yards.
"It was a well taken goal,'' said PHC coach Jack Castle.
"He's been putting them away like that all along in the Alliance Division. We created more outright chances than Vasco but our finishing wasn't there. We need to work on that between now and Sunday.'' Castle was sent off the bench late in the game for refusing to sit down inside the technical area, having been spoken to by fourth official George O'Brien in the first half. Castle took the matter up with referee Crockwell at the half and again after the match, complaining that the rule has not been consistently enforced.
