Pro's double-eagle helps fire Scots into contention

Scottish team Prestwick go into today's final round of the Goodwill Tournament in equal second place after carding a scorching 55 yesterday to rocket up the leaderboard.

Playing at Belmont, the Scots registered the lowest score of the three days' play so far and moved within two strokes of the lead.

Bermuda's Belmont held their pole position after carding a 63 on their home course. And Port Royal further strengthened the local challenge by carding a 58 at Belmont to move up to fourth place, three shots behind the leaders.

Defending champions Dedham's 64 at the Mid Ocean Club left them well set for another shot at the title, just two shots behind Belmont.

But the day belonged to Prestwick and in particular their professional, Frank Rennie, who managed a double eagle (albatross) two at the par-five 10th hole.

Rennie said: "We combined really well today and everything came together at the 10th when I holed out with a five-iron for a two. Then I birdied the next two holes, but it was a team effort -- we were all making some very good putts.'' Rennie felt he and team-mates Jack Mettler, Bill Lyons and Ted Krug, had probably been helped by a worsening in conditions from the wind-free, unbroken sunshine of the first two days.

"We were last out at 10.00 a.m. and we got quite a lot of wind and a bit of rain too -- you could say it was Scottish weather!'' he said.

"I thought Belmont might have done a lot better on their home course -- a 63 was not much good to them -- but you have to take this game one day at a time.'' In today's concluding round, three of the leading pack of four -- Belmont, Prestwick and Port Royal -- play the Mid Ocean course, while Dedham round off their tournament at Castle Harbour.

And it could be a thrilling final day, with a clutch of other teams in with a chance. On 181, four shots off the lead, are St. Louis and Tupper Lake, while Bedrock, Needham and Suffield are tied on 182.

IN THE DRIVING SEAT -- Bermuda's Belmont team of (left to right) Chris Phillips, David Rocha, Wade Jerrett and Cornell Bean, top the leaderboard going into today's final round of the Goodwill Tournament.
