The pair completed a weekend double yesterday, successfully defending their titles in the annual BPSA 10K road race less than 24 hours after having romped to comfortable victories in the national cross-country championships at Ferry Reach.

Smith has been virtually unbeatable in domestic races over the past couple of years and Eatherley's record has been equally impressive since she returned to full fitness following the birth of her second child.

In Saturday's cross-country, which attracted a disappointing field of less than 20 runners in the open male division, Smith easily held off the challenge of Jay Donawa as he completed the seven mile-plus course in 42 minutes and 10 seconds.

Donawa clocked 44.51 with John Wassenar taking third in 45.48, well clear of fourth-placed Tracy Wright (47:24), running his first race since leading the locals home in the recent New York Marathon.

Eatherley won over a women's course of about five and a half miles in 39:33, more than a minute clear of Lynn Patchett (40.52). Top triathlete Laurie Orchard placed third in 49:28.

In the junior championships, Henry Talbot (23.30) pulled off a mild surprise when he outsprinted Mark Morrison (23.32) to win the boys' 13-15 age division.

Morrison, however, rebounded strongly yesterday when he placed second behind Smith in the hilly BPSA 10K. Smith was timed in 32.50 and Morrison in 36.00.

David Dunwoody took third place in 36.02.

Again Eatherley led the ladies in 38.27 with Patchett finishing second in 41.09. Jane Christie, the first master, was third female overall in 43.10.
