Rangers rescued by late penalty
Janeiro Tucker's penalty kick three minutes into stoppage time allowed Southampton Rangers to leave St. John's Field with a share of the spoils.
Controversial though it was, the equaliser proved no less than Rangers deserved as they were on the verge of blowing a two-goal lead.
Pernell Douglas' challenge on Corey Simmons appeared harmless enough but the midfielder went down and referee Richard Knight pointed to the spot, much to the ire of Town and their supporters.
On the flip side, Rangers breathed a huge sigh of relief as they were put to the sword by Town in the second half and were looking a beaten team.
Slipshod defending by Town presented Rangers with a 2-0 lead after 44 minutes on goals from Rohaan Simons and Kwame Tucker. And there should have been at least two more as the front-runners missed a hatful of chances.
But little Hieys Wolfe, 16, saved the day for Town just before the half with the goal of the day and then he duplicated the trick early in the second half, giving an expert lesson in finishing to everyone else on the pitch.
Darron Simons headed Town into the lead and from that point they did not look like being beaten, or even tied, but they failed to take advantage of further chances in a passion-filled affair and ultimately paid a dear price.
Town inexplicably fell behind in the 11th minute when Simons broke clear of Lionel Furbert, mishit his shot but celebrated wildly nonetheless as Antoine Lightbourne made a hash of the bounce.
Town were now at their shakiest in defence and Kwame Tucker soon got round Dean Bailey but saw Lightbourne save at his feet.
Simons then casually side-footed straight to the 'keeper in the 25th minute and soon after Tucker's left-foot drive was gathered at the second attempt.
On the half-hour, Simons beat the offside trap and again side-footed to Lightbourne with Tucker free on the right.
On 35 minutes, it was Herbie Dillas' turn and to his credit an advancing Lightbourne did well to save. The rebound fell to Simons and his shot was shepherded off the line by Ryan Evans.
The second goal finally came when Tucker kept his cool after receiving a Simons pass and slotted the ball inside the right upright.
Rangers barely had time to settle before Wolfe brought Town to life with a dynamite shot from all of 25 yards that hit the back of the net before former international Randy Darrell left his feet.
For those who blinked, the slightly-built midfielder repeated the trick two-and-a-half minutes into the second half.
Of course, by then, Darron Simons had missed a gift straight from the kick-off.
But back to the youngster, and again Darrell was left floundering as the ball crashed in off the underside of the bar, Simons providing the vital cross.
Wolfe looked set to complete a hat-trick of rockets in the 67th minute but a Rangers defender got in the way. There would be no respite, however, as the ball rebounded to Paul Cann on the right and his lob to the back post was nodded in by Simons. Rangers looked shattered. But they did not give up and that last surge gave them what they came for.
