Rangers wrap up promotion
Southampton Rangers sealed their return to the First Division yesterday with this emphatic victory over lowly Paget at Southampton Oval.
The league leaders scored three goals in each half to move onto 24 points from 12 matches which is more than three of the other four promotion contenders can attain from their remaining matches.
Now they need just a draw in their next match -- or a dropped point by Social Club -- to make certain of winning the division.
Jason Raynor gave Rangers a good start yesterday with an early goal after just one minute and Erskine Brangman added the second eight minutes later. The third came from Irwin Trott after 15 minutes.
Southampton extended their lead to 4-0 lead early in the second half with Neville Grant scoring after 50 minutes.
Then top scorer Alfred Wolffe made it 5-0 after 56 minutes and Gary Williams completed the scoring after 73 minutes.
Prospect 1 Somerset Eagles 0 Prospect slowed Somerset Eagles' promotion chase as a 22nd minute goal by John Richmond proved decisive in this scrappy encounter at Police Field.
Richmond connected with a firm header just inside the penalty area, beating goalkeeper Kevin Simons.
A win would have put Eagles squarely in control of the second promotion place behind runaway leaders Southampton Rangers. Instead they now find themselves on 16 points and in a dogfight with St. David's, Social Club and Port Royal.
Ham. Parish 0 Social Club 5 Social Club kept their hopes of a return to the First Division alive with this convincing win at Wellington Oval.
Melvin Bowen scored twice for Social Club and then got himself sent off in the 85th minute for foul language. By then the victory was secure as further goals from Shannon Burchall, George Liburd and Earlston Wolffe made certain of the points. Parish have now netted 50 goals this season.
St. David's 2 Port Royal 2 St. David's and Port Royal dropped a vital point at St. David's as Port Royal refused to buckle despite twice going behind.
Keith Jennings gave St. David's the lead after five minutes only for Winston Thomas to equalise a minute later. In the 43rd minute Jennings notched his 11th goal of the season with a free kick from 25 yards, just moments after Patrick (P.J.) White had struck the bar with a long range shot.
Worrell Bean clinched a point for the visitors with a second equaliser in the 51st minute.
