Records are there to be broken as eight-year-old Elizabeth Brewin showed during the recent Harbour Open at the BASA pool.
The Dolphin Swim Club member shared four new records with 12-year-old Roy-Allan Burch of Sharks during heats on the opening evening. But Brewin was apparently not satisfied with that as she broke her own records again on Saturday morning during the finals.
In the 50 metres freestyle, Brewin knocked another two 10ths of a second off her own record when she recorded a time of 38.64 seconds. She then followed by swimming a 21.31 time in the 25 metres backstroke which beat her own day-old record by 12 100ths of a second.
Burch broke the 200 metres backstroke mark in the boys 11-12 with a time of 2:35.48. The old record of 2:36.97 held by Matthew Hammond had stood since 1993.
In the 100 metres backstroke, Burch also set a new mark with a winning time of 1:11.70, eclipsing Hammond's record of 1:12.76 which had also stood since 1993.
Swimmers representing teams from three North American clubs competed in the Harbour Open, as well as Sunday's Trunk Island Swim and numerous other activities during their week-long stay.
The visiting teams included Canadian junior national swimmer Shayna Burns, 15, and Samantha Pfaller, 16, a Canadian national swimmer, both from Champion Athletic Club.
SAILING SLG Jon Corless in Anarchy and Shelagh Tasker in Sadiiqi qualified for the Bermuda National Match Racing Championships this year when they finished first and second in racing in Hamilton Harbour.
The pair will represent the J24 class in the national championships for the Goslings Black Seal Cup which will be held in Hamilton Harbour on September 5-6.
With six boats taking part in last Sunday's round robin format, competition was intense throughout, with Corless and Tasker prevailing. Should they do well during next month's event they will have a chance to qualify for the prestigious Gold Cup match racing event in October.
