Red Devils cruise past Trojans

Had skipper Elliott Jennings not missed a penalty that would have put his side comfortably ahead 3-0 after 65 minutes and striker Phillip Clarke not blown a simple chance near the end it would have been a far more demoralising outing for the home team in this game at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

Despite the misses, North Village were still able to score an emphatic victory over opponents who on the day looked no better than a bunch of honest triers with no real sparke to their play.

Village took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Clarke after 32 minutes and their second came from Andrew Bascome after 48 minutes.

With the Trojans struggling to find their rhythm during the first half, North Village were allowed to take the upper hand with Kevin Jennings, Basome and skipper Jennings prominent in midfield.

Village pinned down the defence for long spells but were denied from taking a deserved lead until after 32 minutes when Trojans midfielder Andrew Rahman miskicked, enabling Clarke to gain possession outside of the box, advance some 15 yards past two defenders and score from close in.

Such was the plight of the home team that their only shot on goal came when Kwame Tucker half-struck a ball that rolled harmlessly at goalkeeper Carlyle Crockwell after 32 minutes.

Although the home team came alive when play restarted by demonstrating more urgency in their approach work, it was North Village who struck first.

After 48 minutes, Clarke blocked a clearance by goalkeeper Antoine Swan and then diminutive winger Tito Smith provided the cross that saw Bascome finish off by steering the ball home from close range.

The Trojans came into the game with increasing momentum but Anthony Burchall and Rodney Bascome could do no better than put shots from outside the penalty box high and wide of the goal.

After 65 minutes, North Village were awarded a penalty after substitute Sean Dill was fouled by defender Paul Place, but Jennings' penalty kick struck the post and was cleared.

Near the end, North Village had two more scoring chances but Swan dived to save a blast from Dill and then Clarke followed this up by sadly putting an effort wide from an angle close in on the left.
