Red Devils pick up first win
North Village took home with them a 3-0 victory as they literally pounded St.
David's into submission at St. David's with Clinton Caisey, Sean Dill and Kevin Jennings tallying for the Red Devils.
There were ominous signs early in the match as North Village continually pounded the ball into their opponents' goalmouth at will.
After the first goal, coming in the ninth minute of play, one could sense that a route of the east-enders was imminent. A harmless ball was passed into the St. David's half of the field. Del Hollis who was covering on the play allowed the ball to carry within a few yards of his goal-line when he tried, unsuccessfully, to back-heel the ball off of Village's Tito Smith.
Smith picked up the loose ball and sent a cross into the penalty area to a waiting Clinton Caisey who rifled the ball home from close range.
In the 13th minute, Sean Dill picked up an errant goal kick and rushed in on goal unmolested only to have his shot just barely go over. Village were later rewarded for their perseverance as they artfully dissected the St. David's defence to score their second goal.
The goal resulted as St. David's Dale Fox misplayed the ball on the halfway line. Sean Dill picked him clean and raced in on advancing goalkeeper George O'Brien who kicked the ball off Dill's leg. But as luck would have it, the ball bounced directly in front of Dill who calmly shot into the vacant goal.
The second Village score could possibly have taken the wind right out of the sails of most teams. However, St. David's showed their mettle, held tough and displayed the kind of skill and determination they will require if they are to remain in the top division.
In the 26th minute they were unlucky not to score after some fine passes between Kanhai Fray and Albert Steede saw Steede make a fine run down the right flank. His pass to an unmarked Fray resulted in a header that whistled just past the right upright.
However, Village were unfazed by their rivals' near miss for in the 30th minute they struck again. After some sloppy and indecisive play by St.
David's, Village's hard-working Albert Caisey pounced on a loose ball on the left side of the penalty area. His cross into the six-yard box managed to elude everyone except Kevin Jennings who was perched on the edge of the box and shot past the out-of-position 'keeper O'Brien and a sprawled-out Shea Pitcher.
In the 38th minute St. David's, in one of their infrequent raids on the day, saw Pat White's cross into the Village penalty area mishandled by Village's 'keeper, Cymande Davis. The ball bounded out to a waiting Maxwell Dill whose blast went just wide of the right post.
The game saw its first yellow card when St. David's Dale Fox dragged down Village's Jamel Smith in the 60th minute.
The game also saw its first substitution a minute later as Village brought on Richard Wilson for Tito Smith. The move paid immediate dividends as Wilson got free and raced into the six-yard box.
He would have done better had he shot the ball. Instead, he tried to squeeze the ball into a sea of bodies where the ball ricocheted free of danger.
St. David's followed suit five minutes later when they made a double substitution, bringing on Tim Winkleman and player/coach Garrett (Punchy) Dill for Bruce Andrews and Fray. The move momentarily revived the attack as Dill immediately got into the flow of the game with his controlled play in the midfield and his crisp accurate passing.
In the 82nd minute, Village made another change when they brought on Rahji Edness for a limping Kimandi Binns. Three minutes later, St.David's Dill was shown the yellow card for his near disrobing of Jamel Smith as he latched onto the youngster's jersey for some 15 yards before finally pulling him down.
