Road to the FA Cup final

Kyle, Him Again.'' That was what must have been going through Rangers' goalkeeper Michael Eberly's head as the lanky forward scored twice in each half to kill off the Commercial Division outfit's upset dreams.

Eberly can take credit in holding PHC at bay for over a half-hour but after that he faced a constant barrage.

PHC: T.Williams, N.Simons, S.Simmons, M.Dill, B.Simons, A.Stovell (R.Lightbourne), F.Ming, K.Dill, K.Lightbourne, K.Mills, O.Steede.

Man of the match: Kyle Lightbourne.

Dandy Town 2, Devonshire Colts 0 Lionel Cann showed his early promise as a Cup hero by scoring in the first half and then causing the penalty that prodduced the second.

The match at St. John's field was largely disappointing in quality but Town were happy to avenge a league loss to Colts only two weeks earlier.

Campbell netted the penalty early in the second half and Town might have had a handful more but for poor finishing.

Dandy Town: A.Manders, L.Christopher, E.Richardson, W.Campbell, T.Durham, N.Paynter, V.Astwood, G.Dyer (D.Boyles), Kurt Martin, R.Mallory, L.Cann (P.Cann).

Man of the match: Ricky Mallory.

QUARTER-FINALS, Jan. 19 PHC 4, BAA 0 It took PHC 15 minutes to put BAA in their place in the Zebras' second David and Goliath match-up of the competition.

It was Kyle Lightbourne who scored the first of two goals after Sammy Swan did the early running. Kenny Mills was gifted the second after a goalkeeping error and Lightbourne thundered home the third from just outside the area. Swan closed the scoring just before the end.

PHC: T.Williams (C.Crockwell), N.Simons, D.Wainwright, M.Dill, B.Simons, K.Dill, F.Ming, (O.Steede), K.Mills, K.Lightbourne, S.Swan, W.Trott.

Dandy Town 3, Southampton 0 Two goals from Ricky Mallory and another from Kris Martin continued Town's FA Cup sequence of avenging losses in the league.

Rangers' defence inexplicably left Mallory unmarked in front of goal after only 10 minutes and he gave 'keeper Lynn Tucker no chance.

Tucker did well to thwart Martin on two occasions before half-time, but it was third time lucky for the Town player as he scored from an innocuous position in the 50th minute.

Rangers' best chance came through young Herbie Dillas who saw his effort well-saved by Anthony Manders.

Then Town wrapped it up through a Mallory penalty after a goal-bound Martin was bundled over.

Dandy Town: A.Manders, E.Richardson, L.Christopher, P.Douglas, T.Durham (B.Bruce), G.Dyer, Kris Martin, V.Astwood, Kurt Martin, R.Mallory, R.Parsons.

Man of the match: Kris Martin.

FIRST SEMIFINAL, Feb. 9 Hamilton Parish 1, PHC 3 The effectiveness of the Kyle Lightbourne-Sammy Swan combination up front for PHC was never more evident than in this historic first semifinal of any sort at St. John's field.

Parish's defence was exposed as early as the third minute when Lightbourne nodded down a Mike Dill free kick for Swan to score from close range.

Swan then returned the favour twice to goal-hungry Lightbourne. The first came early in the second half as Lightbourne got on the end of a Swan free kick to side-foot home, then near the end crossed for Lightbourne to head past George Fox.

Parish brought in college student Corey Hill for the match and he showed spurts on the left wing before netting a consolation header in the dying stages.

PHC: T.Williams, A.Stovell (S.Simmons), M.Dill, M.Dill, B.Simons, D.Wainwright, K.Dill, F.Ming, K.Mills, K.Lightbourne, S.Swan, W.Trott (M.Trott).

Man of the match: Sammy Swan.

SECOND SEMIFINAL, Mar. 1 Boulevard 0, Dandy Town 1 After losing both league matches to Boulevard, Town upset the form books to send the cup-holders crashing at White Hill field.

Substitute Lionel Cann took advantage of a rare error by Wayne Richardson to hit the winner in the 76th minute.

The short passing game of both teams did little to endear itself to the multitudes that gathered. At one stage the match resembled a battle zone and several players sported injuries of one sort or another.

The Blazers had the better of the second-half chances, but Anthony Manders and defender Wylie Rudo made certain Town kept a clean sheet.

Dandy Town: A.Manders, L.Christopher, W.Rudo, W.Campbell, N.Paynter, V.Astwood, P.Douglas (R.Parsons), G.Dyer, R.Mallory, C.Smith (L.Cann), B.Bruce.

Man of the match: Neil Paynter.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS MARTONMERE CUP ROUND ROBIN, Oct. 1 Dandy Town 4, PHC 0 Dandy Town started the season as the hottest team in the land. They blasted Devonshire Cougars 8-2 in their league opener and then stopped PHC two nights later at Somerset Cricket Club.

The hero on this night was Kurt Martin, a missing man nowadays. He scored twice while Coolridge Bell and Carlos Smith had the others.

PHC were made to pay for poor finishing -- and some misfortune as they hit the woodwork three times -- by an incisive 20-minute, second-half burst that brought Town three goals.

Dandy Town: A.Manders, W.Rudo, B.Bruce, P.Douglas, W.Campbell, G.Bean, G.Dyer, Kurt Martin, V.Astwood, Kris Martin (L.Furbert), C.Bell (C.Smith).

PHC: C.Crockwell, D.Wainwright, S.Simmons, M.Dill, B.Simons, N.Simons, F.Ming (M.Wade), K.Lightbourne, S.Ming, W.Trott, K.Dill (M.Trott).

Men of the match: Kurt Martin (Dandy Town); Winston Trott (PHC).

LEAGUE, Dec. 7 PHC 1, Dandy Town 0 A moment of brilliance midway through the first half from Kyle Lightbourne was the difference at PHC Stadium.

In the 27th minute, the Island's top scorer found the net with a dipping 20-yarder after deftly turning past two defenders.

That was about all of PHC's offence on a day when Town carried the game to their hosts in an attempt to clinch a Dudley Eve Trophy place.

Ricky Mallory, on no less than two occasions, Kurt Martin and Voorhees Astwood all went close for Town.

PHC: T.Williams, N.Simons, S.Simmons, M.Dill, B.Simons, K.Dill, F.Ming, M.Trott (R.Lightbourne), K.Lightbourne, W.Trott, K.Mills.

Dandy Town: A.Manders, L.Christopher, E.Richardson, W.Campbell (W.Rudo), T.Durham, P.Douglas, V.Astwood, Kurt Martin, G.Dyer, R.Mallory, Kris Martin.

Men of the match: Kyle Lightbourne (PHC); Ricky Mallory (Dandy Town).

LEAGUE, Mar. 22 Dandy Town 0, PHC 2 So close to the final, this match was of great importance to Dandy Town in terms of preparation. The result showed they had work to do.

PHC, unwilling to decide the league title on yet another tension-gripped final weekend, defended stoutly at the start and took advantage of the opportunities at St. John's field.

Kyle Lightbourne provided the groundwork for the opening goal after 33 minutes, dribbling by two defenders on the goal-line before crossing for Frank Ming to head firmly past Randy Darrell.

Winston Trott wrapped it up early in the second half when he pounced on a goalkeeping error by Darrell.

Town, as in the previous league match, created chances but skipper Mike Dill and 'keeper Ty Williams kept them at bay.

Dandy Town: R.Darrell, W.Rudo, L.Christopher, W.Campbell, T.Durham, B.Bruce, G.Dyer, R.Parsons, V.Astwood, R.Mallory (L.Cann), C.Smith (L.Furbert).

Men of the match: Wayne Campbell (Dandy Town); Mike Dill (PHC).
