Rocker pulls off shocker

pull off the second major upset of the ABTC Argus Open yesterday, when she defeated third seed Tracey Berrell.

Rocker sent her more fancied opponent packing in just under three hours, emerging a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victor playing in the Women's `A' Division at the Tennis Stadium.

After a tiring first set, Rocker found the going a bit slow in the second and, after trailing 4-3, conserved energy for what she knew would be a gruelling third set, that decision ultimately paying dividends.

"I'm fortunate to be playing anything at this stage in my life, and I am even more fortunate that I won,'' said a visibly spent Rocker. "I knew it was going to be tough playing a seeded player and all, but all I was doing was just feeling my way and took advantage of the breaks when they came.'' And they frequently did, especially once Rocker altered her game from that of constant lobs to deep shots at the feet of her opponent, keeping Berrell off balance.

In Men's `A' competition John Moore proved a bit more than Larry Samuels could chew, coming away with a 6-0, 6-2 win in less than an hour, while another encounter saw second seeded Eldon Daniels survive an early break on his way to a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Gary Weller.

Other matches saw young Ashley Brooks down Sarah Cooke 6-3, 6-4, Wilfred Gonsalves oust Derek Smith 6-1, 6-1, Coleridge Place defeat Jan Jarmula 6-3, 6-3, Rose Stupfel get past Charmaine Smith 6-1, 6-1 and Darion Thomas down Erwin Leader 7-5, 5-2 (retired).
