Sammy's ups and downs
Heineken Bermuda Open.
The 63-year-old upset men's B singles second seed Nakia Wolffe 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 on Saturday at the Tennis Stadium but yesterday failed to show for his next opponent, fifth-ranked Frank Tersigni.
Wilson was at it for three hours against teenager Wolffe in producing the tournament's first major upset and his biggest personal triumph in the past two seasons. But the hope of a fairytale run quickly evaporated with yesterday's default.
In men's doubles action, top seeds Ricky Mallory and Steve Bean turned on the power to blow away Earl Leader and Eldon Daniels 6-1, 6-0 in under 45 minutes.
Leader and Daniels flattered to deceive when Leader held his serve at 30 in the opening game. But Bermuda's top doubles pair then threw everything at the underdogs and before they could catch their breath it was all over.
Mallory and Bean surrendered a mere 10 points after dropping the first game.
In another top match, mixed doubles fourth seeds Brian Way and Wendy Gelhay toppled Ken McDonald and Ailsa Campbell 6-1, 6-3.
