Schools' showdown settled by penalties
shoot-outs after ending as draws in normal time at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Primary Schools game finished goalless with the East going on to win 3-0 on spot-kicks. Allan Douglas was named Most Valuable Player for the victors and Trevin Ming for the West.
The first Middle Schools game ended 2-2 with Anthony Rocker and Zane Hendrickson on the scoresheet for the East and Ryan Nesbitt and Justin Calderon netting for the West. Hendrickson and Nesbitt were named the respective MVPs as the West clinched the shoot-out 5-4.
The High School game matched CedarBridge for the East with a High School Select representing the West. Tarik Jennings, a driving force for CedarBridge, put his side ahead in the first half, but the Select team fought back after the break to level through the impressive Joey Rego. Rego slammed in a 25-yard free kick after the tireless Aaron Williams had been brought down.
With neither side able to carve out a winning goal, the game went to another shoot-out, but this one was the most thrilling of the afternoon. The Select goalkeeper Ian Armstrong proved his worth, saving one spot-kick in the regular shoot-out and another in sudden death as his side ran out 6-5 winners.
The games were played in memory of educator and sportsman Randy Benjamin, whose funeral took place on the same afternoon. Benjamin had been a coach at several All Star games.
