Shot putter Marshall grabs silver medal
first medal on the opening day on Saturday -- Brittney Marshall earning silver in the under-17 shot putt.
Marshall, the 12-year-old daughter of Bermuda cricket captain Charlie Marshall, lived up to her immense promise when, against mostly 16-year-olds, she had a throw of 11.22 metres to finish second.
Marshall had a PB of 12.12 metres just the previous weekend. Crystal Hayward, also competing in the under-17 shot, threw 8.9 metres in the same event.
Danielle Watson, at 13 the second youngest member of the team, came desperately close to winning the bronze in the 400 metres. Seven of the nine Bermuda squad members were in action on Saturday, with five qualifying and competing in finals later in the day. Three of the athletes had personal best performances.
Gabriel Wilkinson was sixth in the under-20 boys discus with a throw of 38.95 metres while Shar-Dae Whitter was seventh in the under-17 girls 1500 metres finals with a personal best 5:08.66.
Richard Walcott placed fifth overall in the 1500 metres final with a PB of 4:05.26 which improved on a PB of 4:10.16 in the heats earlier. Michelle Trott ran 12.45 in the 100 metres without placing. Today is the final day of competition.
