Simons' double sends Village crashing
Rohaan Simons grabbed two more goals as team-of-the-moment Rangers recorded their fourth win in a row and inflicted a second successive league defeat on North Village.
The wiry left-winger struck in the second and 68th minutes to give him his 12th and 13th goals of the season, 11 of them in the Coca Cola First Division.
Substitute Michael Scott added a third just moments after coming on to complete a miserable day for Village, who had not lost a game until last week's defeat against Vasco.
But the win will probably not be enough for Southampton, who have turned things around in amazing fashion since losing their opening four fixtures, to qualify for the end of the year Dudley Eve competition.
In order to do so they would need to beat lowly PHC next weekend -- not an unlikely outcome on current form -- while Devonshire Colts would have to lose at Hotels and Village would have to slip up further at Somerset.
Village, though, only have themselves to blame for not having already made certain of entry to the tournament. They missed several good openings in this match, particularly in the first half after Simons had given Rangers their early lead with the most incisive of goals.
Simons latched on to a superb cross-field ball from right full back Craig Darrell which cleared his opposite number and stylishly slotted the ball under 'keeper Gladwin Edness as he came out.
Village hit back to dominate for sustained periods, with youth player Jahmarley Samuels influential in a number of moves, but the finishing left much to be desired.
Lionel Cann went close, rattling the bar with a 35-yard left-foot effort which had the beating of Randy Darrell in the Rangers goal. And the Village forwards failed to get a touch to Jamal Smith's teasing cross along the six yard box.
Village were made to pay for their profligacy twice in the space of eight minutes mid-way through the half. After 62 minutes, Simons reacted fastest after Craig Darrell's cracking volley had brought the best out of Edness to lift the rebound into the roof of the net.
And in the 70th minute Scott, who had only just replaced Herbie Dillas, bundled the ball over the line after Edness had failed to gather a tricky left-wing cross.

The goal gave the small attendance something to cheer about and, ironically, came from a mistake by Cougars' most dependable player -- centre-back Shawn Smith.
He hesitated as he went to clear a ball deep in Cougars' territory and was robbed by Mark Ray, who crossed for Smith to score from close range.
Colts had done enough to deserve their victory despite a marked improvement by their opponents, who had suffered three one-sided league defeats in recent weeks. However, it took some brilliant goalkeeping by Mark (Burger) Jennings to keep the score down.
And the bottom side lacked the ideas to provide adequate service for their big strikers Wali Salaam and substitue Phillip Clarke. Indeed their best chance didn't come until the 60th minute and then it was a set-piece.
The hard-working Sheldon Caisey watched as his 22-yard free kick was sensationally tipped around the post by goalkeeper Troy Hall, who dived full length to his left to keep the ball out.
Colts could have made the game safe with 15 minutes remaining, when Jennings also showed his agility, diving to tip a Sekai Waldron shot over the bar.
Five minutes later Jennings again showed good reactions for a burly man, as he advanced and fell at the feet of Keishon Smith to smother his shot.
Moments before the end, Cougars had substitute Ryan Swan sent off for a foul on Vic Ball.
