Smith gallops clear

home first in the Evian 10 miler, more than a minute clear of his nearest rival.

Now Smith wants to transfer his outstanding form on the roads onto the track and is aiming to qualify for the 5,000 meters in this summer's Central American and Caribbean track and field championships.

Yesterday's victory for Bermuda's road-running king came in a time of 54 minutes, 39 seconds and was all the more impressive because he had not been able to train properly all week.

Smith was taking penicillin for a gum infection and only resumed training with a light run last Friday.

Tracy Wright set the pace for the majority of the race, but Smith produced a devastating burst at the end to finish more than a minute in front, adding the Evian title to last week's Lindo's 10K and the MRM Five Flat Miles the week before.

"I ran with Tracy for the first nine miles and I was not pushing myself, but I ran the last mile really hard -- I just wanted to see what I could do,'' said Smith.

David Dunwoody came third in 56:27 and Brett Forgesson fourth in 57:51.

Forgesson's wife Anna Eatherley was the first woman over the line and 19th overall in 1:01:48, followed by Maria Conroy-Haydon (1:04:53) and Karen Adams (1:04:58).

Eatherley was, like Smith, also celebrating her third win in successive weeks.

She said: "The conditions were just a little bit hot for me, but it was good training for May 24.'' Smith added that rather than racing, his focus was on training, in particular for the CAC Championships.

He has already qualified for the event in the half-marathon with his time of 1:08:51 in November's Bermuda Sun Half Marathon, the fastest time ever by a Bermudian over 13.1 miles. The CAC qualifying standard is 1:11:00.

Two years ago, Smith came eighth in the CAC Championships half-marathon in hot, humid conditions in Puerto Rico, in a time of 1:11:36.

But now he wants to test his legs over a shorter distance against international competition.

"I want to try and qualify for the 5,000 metres and I want to be competitive over that distance. I think the qualifying time is about 15:15 and I want to try and get it at a track event soon.'' But he had no ambitions to run over the same distance in July's Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, as the qualifying standard was much higher.

Smith shone on the CAC stage in January, when, in the region's cross country championships in St. Lucia, he finished seventh out of 40 runners, helping the Island to place fifth overall.

Yesterday's winners: Kavin Smith and Anna Eatherley.
