Somerset poised for youth triple
when they take the field against BAA in the final of the Crystal Palace Youth Cup that precedes the FA Cup final on Sunday (12.30 p.m.).
Having already won the league title and the Bantam Shield they enter the match heavily favoured to capture their third piece of silverware. However, they face a battle with a BAA squad that despite their low finish in the league have shown tremendous improvement in their play over the second half.
BAA upset North Village 3-2 in their semifinal replay after receiving a bye through the quarter-finals. Conversely the west end team marched to the final on the strength of covincing wins over Devonshire Colts and Dandy Town -- 6-2 and 5-1 respectively.
Both teams will first have to come to grips with the spacious National Stadium pitch. Somerset would appear to have an advantage in this area having already played three matches there.
"We have to use the width of the pitch,'' said Somerset coach Josef Gooden.
"BAA are no pushovers and we need to stick to our game plan of playing from the back through the midfield, which has been our strength.'' Kwame Tucker, who performed in the Secondary Schools All-Star Classic, is an integral part of that midfield and is expected to supply the goal-scoring opportunities.
And in Johnny Best and skipper Lamaul Crofton, the young Trojans possess a striking tandem, which has accounted for over 50 goals thus far. The pair have been awesome and present a dilemma the BAA defence will have to solve if they are to keep them off the scoresheet.
BAA will attempt to counter Somerset's speed and ball skills with size, determination and accurate distribution of the ball.
Said coach David Kneisler: "We want to play the ball around the triangle and make use of the space, and our size also helps.
"We realise that Somerset are a good team but if we play well and maintain possession we can beat them.'' Midfielder Paul Franco, a member of the Bermuda Under 16 Youth Squad has been steady all season for the young Green Knights.
Danny Faria, another youth squad player, anchors the defence, while right-winger Alex DeCouto has shown tremendous promise with his one-on-one ability.,
