Sparkling Steede warms up for Cup Match with 202

Somerset Bridge 126 Albert Steede hit an astonishing unbeaten double century for Western Stars yesterday and became the first player to reach 1,000 runs for the season.

Steede, who will captain Somerset in Cup Match later this week, smashed 18 fours and three sixes in his 202 not out as Stars crushed Somerset Bridge by 237 runs at St.John's Field.

It was by far the biggest individual innings of the season and pushed Steede's average over the 100 mark.

Steede has been in sparkling form this campaign and has now amassed 1,121 runs for the season. Yesterday's innings is thought to have been the first double century scored in 50-overs cricket in Bermuda.

The opener had a personal scoring rate of more than four runs per over as he helped Stars recover from 21-2 to pile up an enormous total of 363-5.

Steede was well supported by Cleon Scotland, who hit 58, and Andre Manders, who scored 37.

Fine bowling by Hasan Durham (three for 33) and Arnold Manders (three for 40) finished off the job for Stars, as Bridge were bowled out for 126.

For the west-end side only opener David Jones (36), Leroy Brangman (23) and Perry Saunders (21) reached double figures.

Cleveland 260-6 Police 117 Left-arm spinner Peter Philpott bowled Cleveland to an emphatic victory at Police Field yesterday, with a haul of five for 17.

Police's lower order collapsed as they chased a victory target of 261 and Philpott did most of the damage in his five overs as the home side's last five wickets fell for just one run.

Jason Simons was the top scorer for Cleveland, hammering 77, while Aaron Adams with 48 and opener Allen Douglas with 41 also made the Police fielders work hard.

Philpott with 20 and Carlos Smith, who hit a brisk unbeaten 24, pushed the Cleveland total to 260-6.

Captain and opener Dennis Archer, who scored 31, was the mainstay of the Police innings, while Steve Lightbourne (26) and Nyon Steede (28) kept their team's faint victory hopes alive.

But Cleveland coasted home after Police caved in from 113-4 to 117 all out.
