St. David's fall despite hurt O'Brien's Broavods
The survival hopes of St. David's could be determined by how quickly their veteran goalkeeper George O'Brien recovers from a shoulder injury he suffered at Bernard Park yesterday.
O'Brien, forced into action because first-choice Dale Fox has committed himself to cricket, dislocated his left shoulder making two saves in succession in the 37th minute.
He was taken to hospital after the match, but with no league matches next weekend because of the FA Cup semifinals, St. David's have two weeks to get him ready for Hamilton Parish.
Village had their own goalkeeping problems going into the match as they were forced to call on 16-year-old Anthony Swan to replace Cymande Davis who had a bike accident on the way to the match.
Just a minute after putting a shot wide of the near post after an Elliott Jennings pass pierced the St. David's defence, Philip Clarke made amends a minute later with his first domestic goal since December 20.
It came when a goal-kick by O'Brien was headed back through the St. David's defence by defender Michael Hansey for Clarke to beat the advancing 'keeper to the ball.
Village kept on the pressure and St. David's did not get their first corner until the 21st minute from which a free kick resulted on the edge of the box after Maxwell Dill was fouled.
Richardson's hard shot along the ground got through the wall and the wet ball slipped out of Swan's clutches before he grabbed it again near the goal-line.
Village struck twice more in the 28th and 43rd minutes to build a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half and leave St. David's, also missing Albert Steede and Del Hollis because of cricket, with plenty of work to do in the second half.
Jamel Smith forced a corner on the left side and from Kevin Jennings' corner the unmarked Hansey scored with a firm header inside the far post.
Village put the match out of the reach David's in the 43rd minute when St.
David's player/coach Garrett (Punchy) Dill was robbed by Elliott Jennings who set up Smith to score with a low shot past O'Brien.
O'Brien, despite the lack of mobility, made a string of saves in the second half to keep out Village despite taking further knocks on the shoulder.
St. David's finally found the net in the 79th minute with a low shot from a free kick outside the area from substitute Sean Smith.
