Steede launches assault on Police for season's high

Police 132 Albert Steede continued his mastery over local bowlers by hammering his second century of the season against Police at St. John's field, leading Stars to a comprehensive 157-run victory.

Steede unleashed a massive assault on the bowlers on route to an undefeated 152, slamming nine fours and six sixes while batting throughout the innings.

He and fellow opener Jermaine Postlethwaite (69) put on 142 for the opening stand, the latter stroking five fours and a six. Ricky Brangman added 23.

Terry Thomas was the best of the Police bowlers with three for 57 off nine overs while Freston Hurdle finished with two for 48.

Police's shoddy batting reared its ugly head once again with their first five front line players only managing 30 between them.

Number 10 bat Hurdle was left to show how to tackle the bowlers with confidence, stroking 33 to become top scorer. Daniel Reece followed with 20, Kenny Phillips scored 18 and John Pitcher 13.

Veteran fast bowler Gary Brangman led the Stars attack with three for 22 off 10 overs, including two maidens, while spinner Hasan Durham snatched three for 30 off 10 overs, also with two maidens. Allan Brangman claimed two for 34 off 8.1 overs and three maidens.

St. George's 137 Devonshire 132 Devonshire Rec. were so close to victory at Wellington Oval they could taste it.

But a sniff was the best they could manage as a late slump cost them an upset.

Chasing a modest total, the visitors had the home team staring defeat in the face at 130-6 before they turned the tables by claiming four wickets in three overs for just two runs to remain unbeaten in the league after five games.

But it should have been defeat number one for the joint league leaders with just eight runs needed and key batsman Anthony Amory still there and looking comfortable.

However, things changed when he skied a shot off Ricky Hodsoll to mid-wicket where former Devonshire Rec. player Dexter Smith held the catch to dismiss him for 31.

Now sniffing victory themselves, St. George's closed in for the kill, with Eugene Foggo then removing Monroe Smith in the next over to make it 130-8.

Hodsoll, leading a weakened team in the absence of captain Herbie Bascome, then wrapped up victory in successive balls in the next over when he had Winston Trott caught on the boundary by Sinclair Gibbons and Lyle Millett snapped up at cover by Dexter Smith.

Spinner Travis Smith finished with three for 11 off 10 overs while Hodsoll, the sixth bowler used, had three for 32 from 8.4 overs and Foggo one for 22 off nine.

Cal Grimes was joint high scorer with Amory following his 31 at number three while opener Audley Campbell scored a patient 29 before being run out.

Earlier, Devonshire set themselves up for victory by dismissing St. George's for just 137, their lowest score of the season. It went wrong from the first over when last weekend's century-maker, Dexter Smith, fell to a catch behind off Lyle Millett.

Troy Hall propped up the innings in the middle order, moving them from 84-5 to 126-6 with a knock of 38. The innings fell apart after Hall's departure as just 11 runs were scored for the last four wickets. Opener Foggo was next high with 24.

Amory was the pick of the Rec. bowlers with three for 17 while JaJa Millet had two for 15 and Dennis Williams two for 48.

Cleveland 175 St. David's 179-3 St. David's bounced back from their defeat in the Knockout Cup the day before with a comfortable seven-wicket triumph over Cleveland at Lord's. A four wicket haul by spinner Del Hollis (4-52) and three for 26 from captain Clay Smith helped restrict Cleveland to 175, despite Jason Simons' 72 off four fours and three sixes at number three.

Simons shared in two good stands before St. David's hit back, adding 48 for the second wicket with Curtis Jackson (28) and then putting on 62 for the third wicket with Peter Philpott (29) as the visitors were in a good position at 125-3.

However, they were never able to build on the good start as the spin duo of Hollis and Smith set them back, never to recover. Chris Foggo was in good form behind the stumps, picking Knockout Cup, Page 33 Master class: Albert Steede steers the ball past Police wicket-keeper Andrew Rollins on his way to an undefeated 152 -- the highest score of the current season.

Belboda's six-wicket demolition up two catches and two stumpings.

And the home team showed a marked improvement on their batting to pick up their third win in four outings as Lionel Cann stroked 11 fours in his 66 not out and Smith hit 21 not out in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 80. Opener Allen Richardson started things off with 35.

Cecil (Sam) Pitcher, a former St. David's player, was the most successful Cleveland bowler, taking two for 37 from his 10 overs.

Social Club 117 Southampton 118-0 Ryan Belboda demolished Social Club's batsmen and Janeiro Tucker and Keith Wainwright feasted off their bowling as Southampton Rangers scored an emphatic ten-wicket victory in this game at Southampton Oval.

The meagre total posted by Social Club came about mainly because of the destruction engineered by Belboda who finished with six wickets for 27 off nine overs.

Janeiro Tucker finished with two for 27 off seven overs with two maidens while Chelsea Wisingie had one for 19 off five overs as Social Club succumbed in 28 overs.

Opener Elvis Richardson was one of four Social Club batsmen in double figures with 37. Gladwin Richardson and Vance Gilbert stroked 13 apiece while opener and skipper Webster Mills scored 11.

Tucker and Wainwright took just 13.5 overs to steer Southampton to their winning target of 118, Tucker the aggressor with 68 not out with nine fours and three sixes. Wainwright was just a little less aggressive finishing with 50 not out, hitting nine fours and a six.

Somerset CC 124 Willow Cuts 127-3 Spinner Kevin Fubler snatched five for a mere nine runs off 10 overs, including four maidens, and Dwayne Basden stroked 49 to lead Willow Cuts to a seven-wicket victory over Somerset at Somerset.

Except for a third wicket stand that saw 53 added, Somerset's innings lacked any real stability after opener Tony Cheeseman and Wendell White had been separated. Cheeseman scored 22 and White 41.

Willow Cuts reached victory off 26.3 overs. Dwight Basden 16.

PHC 176-9 Somerset Bridge 65 Shoron Hunt rocked Somerset Bridge with a four for nine wicket haul and player-coach James Pace led PHC's batting with 59 as they rampaged to this 111-run victory at White Hill.

The game was reduced to 30 overs after the start was delayed until 2 p.m. when an official umpire, Braxton Stowe, arrived. Until then Bridge refused to have a player from each team officiate.

Batting first PHC reached their respectable total thanks to Pace and Kevin Dill who struck 34.

Spinner David Jones led the Bridge bowling with four for 28 off six overs.

Bridge were afterwards tumbled out in 21.1 overs with nobody reaching double figures.

Hunt took his haul from six overs while Cal Waldron had two for 12 off four overs. Jesse Belboda, 15, finished with two for 21.
