Stout lifts squash team
championships over the weekend -- thanks to a stunning victory by Michael Stout.
The Island team claimed 27th spot out of the 30 teams competing at Princeton University in New Jersey -- having twice previously finished last -- when they edged Venezuela 2-1.
But all the pressure was on 15-year-old Stout, the youngest of Bermuda's three players, after the rubber was tied at 1-1.
Stout came up against 18-year-old Marcos Calleja and got off to a promising start by taking the first game 9-7. But the Venezuelan quickly levelled by taking the second game 9-2.
Stout, however, then played some his best-ever squash to crush his opponent 9-4, 9-2 in the next two games to clinch the match.
Earlier Bermuda had got off to a poor start when Sam Stevens lost in five games to Javier Fernandez (5-9, 10-8, 9-0, 1-9, 0-9).
But number one Nick Kyme, who will travel with Tommy Sherratt to represent Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia next month, quickly levelled the tie with a 9-2, 9-1, 9-0 thrashing of Venezuela's number one Alexander Kasab.
Bermuda finished the championships ahead of Kenya, El Salvador and Venezuela.
England won the title, defeating Egypt in the final.
