Sub Brangman fires Somerset through
(after extra-time) Substitute Michael Brangman snatched the winning goal 12 minutes into extra-time of this FA Cup third round game at Wellington Oval yesterday, latching onto a cross from Keion Simmons and blasting the ball home from 20 yards.
The Trojans should have finished the game off with a two-goal triumph but Brangman missed a sitter six minutes from the end of extra-time when he put a shot wide from just 12 yards after breaking through the middle with nobody to beat but the advancing Cymande Davies in the Parish goal.
But Parish were made to pay for missing the few chances that fell their way in regulation time in a game that was rather dull throughout.
They were unlucky after 65 minutes when Kuma Smith took a short free kick from player-coach Ricky Hill and fired a fierce 24-yard shot that goalkeeper Keenan Tucker brilliantly tipped over for a corner.
Hill, who added thrust to the attack when he came on for his nephew Clevon after 60 minutes, headed a cross from Chris Caisey over from 12 yards after 70 minutes and Smith sent another screaming 20-yarder which goalkeeper Tucker was able to smother.
Somerset came more into the game when it entered extra-time but misses haunted them too -- one major blunder coming from the out-of-touch Terrence Christopher who put a cross from Andrew Rahman wide from just 10 yards out.
The attacking woes of the Trojans finally ended when Brangman, coming on as a sub for Rodney Bascome after 65 minutes, put his superior speed to use to hit the winner.
Dev. Colts 2 Wolves 0 Wolves' FA Cup hopes were scuppered at White Hill Field by a determined Devonshire Colts outfit.
Aljame Zuill and Melchisadec Gibbons scored for Colts, but Wolves had their chances.
In a slow first half, numerous Wolves' players tried shots from long range that hardly bothered Troy Hall in the Colts goal.
Colts might have had a goal in the 22nd minute but 'keeper Kevin Bean came out of his box quickly to tip away Keishon Smith's shot. Bean also did well to take the ball off Aljame Zuill's head in the 25th minute following a fine cross from Smith.
At the other end, Hall gave a sigh of relief after Nirobi Smith dribbled through his defence only to release a weak shot from just 15 yards.
The pace of the game picked up in the second half and Colts broke the deadlock in the 57th minute.
Goalkeeper Bean tried to clear a back-pass only to make a hash of it and present the ball to Zuill, who fired home from 25 yards.
Substitute Gibbons added the second with a stylish finish. The tricky foward found himself unmarked as Wolves' defence stopped, expecting an off-side flag, allowing Gibbons to break towards goal and then dummy twice before slipping the ball past Bean.
Wolves pressed hard and fully deserved a goal. Ellington Weldon had a golden opportunity in the 80th minute he watched in disappointment as his 15-yard shot went wide and then Nathan Webb failed to poke the ball home from five yards after Nakia Smith's free kick had been fumbled by Hall.
