Super Simons puts on a Classic show

East 1 West 2 The West gained revenge for their defeat in last year's inaugural match as Rohaan Simons struck twice before a large crowd at cold, windy Somerset yesterday.

The Southampton Rangers player showed the form that has made him the top scorer in the First Division this season, opening the scoring after just 90 seconds and then converting a brilliant winner late in the half to seal the win in an exciting match.

The clash equalled the high standard set in last year's game as Simons matched Dwight Warren with his two goals. Long before the final whistle there was no question as to who the MVP would be ...the second goal itself being worthy of the award.

Simons broke the deadlock in the second minute when Otis Steede's shot from 25 yards hit the near post with Troy Hall beaten. Reggie Tucker quickly pounced and squared the ball back to the far post where Simons scored from close range.

But the East didn't take long to equalise, doing so in the eighth minute with a spectacular header from Corey Hill. Warren supplied an inch perfect cross from the left to the far post where Hill rose and headed powerfully past Timmy Figureido.

Free to enjoy themselves without the pressure of battling for league points, the players produced some exciting football as both teams attacked.

After both teams went close, Simons produced another piece of spectacular finishing to settle the match for the West in the 37th minute.

Full back Enwar Hunt swung in a good cross from the right to the far post where Simons sent a first time shot smashing into the bottom corner.

With unlimited substitutions, the West made four changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Corey Simmons, Lamaul Crofton, Corey Dowling and Marco Butterfield for Devarr Boyles, Reggie Tucker, Dean Bailey and Otis Steede.

The East countered by replacing Vic Ball, Jahmah Samuels and Michael Hansey with Jamel Smith, Dean Boyles and Leroy Stevens. Both goalkeepers were also changed, Nyon Steede taking over from Troy Hall and Winslow Williams for Timmy Figureido.

The closest the East came in the second half came in the 62nd minute when Warren's shot was cleared off the line by Dowling.

Referee: Lyndon Raynor Most Valuable Player: Rohaan Simons (West) Blue 3 Red 1 Substitute Devone Bailey scored two late goals to give the Blue Select victory in the opening Junior match.

The game was headed to penalty kicks before Bailey, who plays for PHC, broke the deadlock when he scored directly from a corner in the 80th minute. Right on full time Bailey struck again to make certain of victory when he nipped in to beat the advancing Jason Smith. He was later voted Most Valuable Player.

The first half scoring came from Otis Minors who put the Red team in front in the 25th minute and Jahmiko Marshall who equalised in the 40th minute from the penalty spot.

Yellow 2 Blue 0 MVP Terry Paynter set up one goal in the first half and scored the other in the second as the Yellow triumphed in the women's All-Star match.

After a series of corners, the Yellow team took the lead in the 27th minute when Paynter, their captain, crossed from the right and Wayneisha Bean converted.

After Catherine Clarke wasted a couple of good scoring opportunities for the Yellow team in the second half, Paynter showed her how to find the net in the 66th minute when she chipped a free kick from the edge of the box into the roof of the net.
