Tail takes Parish clear

A last-wicket stand of 80 in 41 minutes between Curtis Lee and Philip Bailey proved decisive as Hamilton Parish scored a 63-run win over Somerset at Wellington Oval.

Parish had slumped from 128 for four to 158 for nine when Bailey strode to the wicket to join Lee. And while Somerset were expecting to be batting before the tea break, Lee and Bailey broke their spirit with a defiant stand.

From a Parish standpoint the only disappointment in that partnership was that Lee did not go on to complete his 50, finishing not out on 49 after Bailey had been bowled by Marc Bean for 30. Lee hit seven fours during his 54-minute innings while Bailey hit five fours in his knock.

Parish had also received a good contribution at the other end of their innings when Millard Bean scored 46 and Mike Burgess 22 as they put on 54 for the first wicket in 41 minutes, before Burgess was first to go.

Wickets fell cheaply after that as Irving Burgess could only manage four, and captain Dennis Trott six before Brian Morris scored 21 in the middle order.

Somerset skipper Perry Maybury finished with two for 41, Winston Reid two for 38, both from 10 overs, while Bean had two for 21 in just three overs.

Maybury, who promoted himself to opener alongside Kevin Saunders, shared in a first-wicket stand of 30 from which he contributed 18 while Saunders, second out when the score was 50, hit 22.

Another 36 came for the third wicket as Somerset made good progress at 86 for three when Roger Hunt departed for 32.

Toriano Davis showed plenty of determination in the middle order as he top-scored with 47, but not before watching four partners depart. He was eventually eighth out when the score was 171.

By then Somerset were well on their way to defeat as Perry Simmons came on to get four of the last five wickets with his medium-pacers. Davis hit five fours during his 79-minute knock.

Bailey and Lee both completed good all-round matches by taking vital wickets early in the Somerset innings. Bailey was three for 40 from 10 overs while Lee claimed two for 34 off eight overs.

Warwick 125 Cleveland 128-2 Veteran Allan Douglas and skipper Peter Philpott played the unfamiliar role as opening batsmen and wasted little time in spearheading Cleveland to an eight-wicket victory over Warwick at Sea Breeze Oval.

Douglas hammered 75 in quick time and Philpott struck a brisk 38 while putting on 107 runs during their opening stand in reply to the lowly total of 125 posted earlier by Warwick.

Although both openers were eventually dismissed, Cleveland still were able to reach victory in rapid time -- requiring just 15.4 overs to do so.

Douglas, who was by far the dominating partner, struck eight fours and five sixes while Philpott contributed four fours and a six. Mark Tucker led Warwick's bowling with two wickets for 37 runs off 3.4 overs.

Skipper Hoyt Zuill led Warwick in batting with 24 while young Daniel Morgan followed with 23. Curtis Jackson took four for 16 off just 5.4 overs while Jermaine Postlethwaite had two for 18 off four overs.

PHC 103 Police 109-4 Police ended a four-game losing streak in the league with this comfortable six-wicket triumph at White Hill field yesterday as Dwayne Leverock claimed five for 25 from 10 overs and then hit a valuable 28 not out as a makeshift opener.

Police, who last won in the league on June 6 when they beat Bailey's Bay, needed just 33.5 overs to run through the PHC batting as the home team won the toss and decided to bat first.

Opener Sheridan Ming was their top bat with 29 while the only other player in double figures was Ty Williams with 11. There were 32 extras in the PHC total, including 18 byes conceded by wicket-keeper Terry Thomas.

Dennis Archer opened the Police bowling with Roger Blades and though he was wicketless in his five overs, Blades claimed three for 14 from 7.5 overs while Wayne Clarke chipped in with two for 10 from four overs.

Archer, batting at number three, led Police with 45, which included five fours and two sixes as the visitors needed just 19.2 overs to reach their target.

Neil Anglin was the best bowler for PHC with two for 26 from five overs.

Flatts 131 Willow Cuts 132-6 Mid-table Willow Cuts made Flatts pay for their decision to bat first at Somerset, but their four-wicket win did not come easy as Flatts offered some resistance.

Off-spinner Kevin Fubler claimed his best figures of the season of five for 12 from six overs and nephew Richard Basden had impressive figures of three for 12 from 10 overs as Flatts were restricted to 131 from 43 overs with Derek Wright scoring 43 of the first 75 runs to top their batting.

Wright came to the wicket at number three with just 10 runs on the board after Kevin Todd was the first of five lbw victims.

Wright added 36 for the second wicket with Troy Dean before the former was third out, having hit six fours and a six.

Rodney Woolridge hit 19 and Troy Bean 15 in the middle order before the last five wickets went down for 14 runs.

Dwayne Basden scored 27 to give Willow Cuts a good start in reply to the Flatts target and, after being 79 for four, Joseph Matthews (23) and Richard Basden (12 not out) put paid to any hopes Flatts had of an upset.

Troy Bean claimed two for 15 from four overs to lead the Flatts bowling.
