Three sent off as Smith's treble sends Colts crashing
Dandy Town 4 Dev Colts 1 Referee Stuart Crockwell was forced to produce more cards than Santa on his Christmas Eve rounds in a game lacking the seasonal spirit at St John's Field yesterday.
Crockwell dismissed Dandy Town's Lionel Furbert and Colts' substitute Marvin Belboda in the 60th minute for fighting and six minutes later red carded Colts' coach Raymond Jones after he had protested too vehemently a linesman's decision.
What the match lacked in football quality, it more than made up for in incident and in addition to the dismissals, there were four bookings, three penalties and a second successive hat-trick for Carlos Smith -- two of whose goals came gift-wrapped from the spot.
And a couple of spectators even got in on the act, staging an impromptu boxing match in front of the bar for those not sufficiently entertained by what was going on on the field.
The match, played in a howling diagonal wind, was completely forgettable before Dandy Town took the lead with the first of the day's penalties in the 22nd minute.
Colts' skipper Shannon Burgess manhandled Smith on the left edge of his own box and Crockwell had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Smith, who grabbed three against Boulevard last week, stepped up and planted the ball to Troy Hall's left.
Town continued to dominate possession, although both teams struggled to control the ball and their crosses because of the breeze.
But Mark Trott's team went closest to scoring again in the first half when a clever flick by Shaki Minors a minute from the break put Heys Wolfe in the clear. He crossed and the ball fell to Furbert, who saw his shot blocked.
Colts, who had offered little up front, brought on Belboda for the ineffective Geron Trott eight minutes after the interval. Some may have thought the substitute was unlucky to have been on the bench after recent impressive performances, but he might have to sit out one or two more games following the incident that earned him his dismissal just seven minutes after he had entered the fray.
A Colts' corner on their right was cleared with some difficulty to the near touchline where suddenly both benches got to their feet. Furbert pointed furiously to his own bloodied mouth and picked out Belboda as the culprit.
Crockwell dispassionately went across to linesman George O'Brien and within seconds had brandished red cards at the pair.
He then directed play back to the Town 18-yard area, where he pointed to the penalty spot. Burgess, who missed a spot kick against Wolves last week, directed his shot the same way, but this time managed to squeeze the ball under goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne.
Crockwell explained afterwards that Furbert had punched Belboda in the box, conceding the penalty, and Belboda had run after him to the touchline to exact his revenge with a head-butt.
Four minutes later, Crockwell had the red card out of his pocket again as Colts' coach Raymond Jones showed obvious anger about an offside decision.
Town brought on Paul Cann and Raymond Beach within eight minutes of one another and then went on the rampage, scoring three times in the last 10 minutes.
First, Smith, collecting a throw on the left, sped down the wing, cut inside and blasted an unstoppable shot past Hall to give his side the lead. It was probably the one momment of quality football in the whole afternoon.
Town full back Dean Bailey then scooped an effort too high after a good run before Devarr Boyles made it 3-1 in the 86th minute.
Hall spilled a shot and as he was trying to gather the ball in, Boyles made space for himself, turned, and fired it back low into the net.
Smith completed his hat-trick in the final minute when Pernell Douglas was upended inside the box.
A delighted Town boss Mark Trott was full of praise for Smith's contribution afterwards.
"Carlos has missed two years of the game because of a groin injury,'' he said. "He was a goalscorer before he picked up the injury and he's just carrying on where he left off.
"We have had to rely too much on Darron Simons and I think it's put too much pressure on him. You can see it this year, he's struggling a little bit with his game. Carlos stood up at our team meeting yesterday and said it was time for somebody else to take some pressure off Darron.'' Dandy Town: A.Lightbourne, D.Bailey, S.Smith, L.Christopher (R.Beach 77 mins), W.Rudo, L.Furbert, P.Douglas, D.Boyles, S.Minors (P.Cann 69 mins) H.Wolfe, C.Smith (K.Smith 90 mins).

Red cards: L.Furbert (Town); M.Belboda, R.Jones (Colts).
Point of contact: Lionel Furbert indicates to referee Stuart Crockwell (right) and linesman George O'Brien where he claimed Marvin Belboda had head-butted him. It did him little good as both were given red cards in yesterday's incident packed game at St John's Field.
Close encounter: Dandy Town's Sean Smith (back) keeps a close watch on a Devonshire Colts player in yesterday's Premier Division match at St John's Field. Town won 4-1 thanks to a Carlos Smith hat-trick.
