Trojans aim to get better despite losses
Division teams and the Second Division Somerset Trojans may not have regained the title of Silver City like the old days when they were conquering all opposition, but last year's accomplishments were defined as a "typical Trojan year'' by Larry Hunt.
Among their feats last season was winning the First Division league title, the Dudley Eve Trophy and the Martonmere Cup.
With the west-enders now eagerly preparing to kick off the new season tomorrow night at Somerset Cricket Club against Boulevard in the Charity Cup, the third-year coach is hopeful of them doing even better this time around... and he does not feel that he will be asking much of his team to pull it off.
One long-time stalwart, though, who Hunt will have to face the challenges ahead without is Dennis Brown -- a former skipper who has held down the centre-back position for more than a decade. But with a few additions and promotions of younger players to the senior squad the coach still reckons that their chances of exceeding last year's success remain good.
"We will not miss Dennis that much because he didn't play regularly at all last season. Overall though I think we will be a better all-round team, especially since we now have Chris Sabir who will make us stronger down our left side, '' said Hunt.
In addition to Sabir who joined from Hotels, the Trojans have also had Jermaine Burrows transfer from Island Rangers and he will help secure the defence, the return of George Cann to fill the left-back position after missing most of last season through injury is another addition that Hunt welcomes.
The middle of the defence will be anchored by two youngsters who did exceedingly well a year ago, Paul Place and Trevor Dickinson. Skipper Brian Simons will hold down the right-back spot.
The midfield could have a different look to it as last season's club MVP Reggie Tucker is set to make a late start as he is expecting his first child.
But the addition of Sabir could ensure that the workload that Tucker normally handles will be adequately covered.
As well as having Sabir coming in as a newcomer, Duval Binns has transferred from Somerset Eagles and will be a welcome addition while young Andrew Rahman has returned from school abroad and could challenge for a regular place as well.
The attack will be spearheaded by Rodney Bascome with other major contributions expected from Billy Kirkpatrick (injured most of last season), Kwame Tucker, Clifton Anderson from Hotels, Franklyn Simmons from Dandy Town and young Lamaul Crofton from Somerset's junior team.
Simmons had good success for Somerset in 1991-92 but saw little or no action at Town last season.
The Trojans will be missing their most experienced forward Jerry Webb, who has gone off to school in the United States.
Goalkeeper Winslow Williams, like Reggie Tucker, was one of their outstanding players last season but his numerous run-ins with the law have him out of Somerset's plans.
Neverthless, there are three challenging to replace him -- last seasons' number two Cordell Gilbert, young Antoine Swan and Gladwin Edness, who transferred from Hotels.
"I have no real concern about our goalkeeping situation at all, all three are very capable players,'' said coach Hunt.
While the coach is optimistic of doing better, realistically speaking it could be asking too much of anyone to improve on a year like they have just turned in -- yet Hunt remains hopeful.
"We will be an improved team in a few positions and if we can avoid a lot of injuries I am confident that we can do better,'' said Hunt.
