Trojans lose ground on leaders
While Devonshire Colts left yesterday's match with a measure of satisfaction regarding the drawn result, Somerset departed ruing a chance lost.
Colts jumped two places from eighth to sixth -- passing Vasco and PHC -- in gaining a share of the spoils. However, the visiting Trojans lost ground on First Division league leaders Dandy Town.
While they remain in second place on goal difference ahead of Boulevard, Somerset now trail Town by two points, although the West Enders have a game in hand.
Yesterday's match promised much, but ultimately delivered little for a soccer starved crowd desperately wanting to be entertained.
Ray Jones tallied to put Colts ahead early in the second half, but his effort was erased as Somerset's captain Reggie Tucker equalised from the penalty spot.
It took less than a minute for the home team to place a shot on target as Jay Bean rifled a free kick into Somerset goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson's midsection, this after young Damon Ming had been fouled near the edge of the penalty area.
But play soon deteriorated especially on Colts' part as Somerset, with the wind slightly in their favour, took control.
In the 26th minute Tucker weaved his way into the six-yard box before unleashing an angled blast that 'keeper Randy Darrell did well to block away for a corner.
Tucker stood firm in midfield as he, along with Randy Simmons and Steval Arorash, dominated in the first half.
The half culminated with Somerset striker Kwame Tucker blazing a right-foot shot inches wide of the left upright after he and Simmons had combined on the left side.
The second half saw a similar script evolve as Colts had their way early, only to have Somerset respond strongly as the half wore on.
Ming surprised Hendrickson with a snap shot in the 49th minute that, fortunately for the 'keeper, nestled in the side-netting.
There would be no saving grace five minutes later, though, as Jones broke free of Somerset's defence and with his opponents screaming for an offside call rammed the ball home from 11 yards past the helpless Hendrickson.
It took exactly two minutes for the reply to come from Somerset as referee Rex Osborne awarded a penalty after Reggie Tucker was tackled from behind by Jahmal Samuels.
Tucker stepped forward to take the kick, squeezing the ball underneath an outstretched Darrell.
Colts survived a number of late scares as Lamaul Crofton, Arorash and Curtis Grant all squandered chances during an 81st minute goal-mouth scramble and then Tucker watched as only the legs of Darrell prevented him scoring in the 88th minute.
