Tumbridge ruled out of Olympics
the Atlanta Olympics, has been forced to pull out.
Her horse, Bermuda's Gold, suffered a hairline fracture of a pelvic bone when it slipped during training last week, and veterinarians have ordered at least six weeks' rest.
Bermuda Equestrian Federation spokesman Mike Cherry yesterday described the injury as a "terrible blow''. "I haven't spoken to Mary Jane but I imagine she is completely devastated,'' said Cherry. "She's worked so hard leading up to these Olympics and she had high hopes of doing well. Her preparation had been going very well.'' Cherry noted that there was no chance of Tumbridge, who is based in Surrey, England, acquiring another horse at this late stage. And her place couldn't be taken by another local rider as none had achieved the qualifying standard.
Her withdrawal leaves Suzie Dunkley, who will ride Elliot in the dressage competition, as Bermuda's sole equestrienne at the Games. She will leave her home in Belgium for Atlanta next week.
