Two out of two for Parker
Pot Professional Championship at Port Royal yesterday.
It was a case of deja vu for Parker, who also won the Goodwill Professional Tournament in a play-off against Bermuda's Dwayne Pearman at the Mid Ocean Club last December.
Just like the Goodwill, Parker had a lead snatched away at the last hole of the one-day contest to force the play-off.
But once again, the club pro from Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, required just one play-off hole to clinch the title and the $1,800 title.
Balentine, of the Champion Hills Club, three-putted at the play-off hole and Parker held par to win.
Parker said: "That's the second time I've played in Bermuda and the second time I've won in a play-off -- maybe I should think about moving here!'' Parker had gone to the 18th hole one under par, with a two-shot lead over Balentine.
But Parker missed a 20-foot putt to hold par and made a bogey, while Balentine chipped straight into the hole from 60 feet for a birdie, so both players finished on 71.
Parker paid tribute to the rival who pushed him so hard: "Ben's a great guy and I feel he deserved to win, but that's just the way golf goes.
"The key to my success was that everyone else did not play very well. I played steady golf and made three birdies, but 71 should not have been enough to win this tournament, given the quality of golfers out there.'' Richard Tinworth, from Hever Golf Club in England, tied for third place with Wannamoisett Country Club's Steve Napoli, just one stroke behind the top two.
And Bob Cornett, of Avila Golf and Country Club in Florida, took fifth place with a 73.
The two men vying to be the first to win the tournament for a fourth time, defending champion Kirk Hanefeld, of Salem Country Club and Mark Alwin, of the Country Club of York, both went round in 75 to tie for ninth place.
An amateur tournament was also played at Port Royal yesterday, on a point quota system.
The under-50s group was won by Mike Brisbois, of Chateau Elan Golf Club, who scored plus-nine points to finish eight points clear of second-placed Jeff Morsberger, of Rolling Road Golf Club.
Bermuda's Danny Fagundo took the honours in the over-50s, scoring plus-seven to finish four shots ahead of two Americans, Ed Krug, of Rolling Road Golf Club and Ron Rowe, of Phoenixville Country Club.
Today will see the final round of the 54-hole Lobster Pot Pro-Am team tournament, currently led by Hever Golf Club from England.
Play-off prince: Rich Parker added the Lobster Pot Invitational to his Goodwill Tournament crown yesterday.
