Venues confirmed for Youth Cup

CONCACAF Youth World Cup competition, although it's not yet known in which of the two countries Bermuda will be playing.

Bermuda Football Association recently received word that two groups of four will play on dates still to be announced, with the final taking place in one of the two countries.

Confirmation of the dates and venues is expected from CONCACAF soon, Bermuda's coaching director Clyde Best said yesterday.

Bermuda's Under-17 squad, said Best, would definitely take part. They have confirmed sponsors in the Bank of Bermuda and are already in training under both Best and staff coach Mark Trott.

The squad, the same one that represented Bermuda in the Youth International Tournament last summer, will meet at the BFA on Monday at 5.30 p.m. when further details about the tournament will be presented.

Meanwhile, nobody was available at BFA headquarters yesterday to confirm reports that the proposed visit by Puerto Rico's national soccer team next week had been cancelled.

Best refused to disclose any information, noting that any statement should come from general secretary David Sabir.

Nor was the coach forthcoming with information about recent attendance by members of the senior national team who are preparing for the Shell Cup tournament in the Cayman Islands in April.

Last week The Royal Gazette revealed that less than half of the 23-member squad turned out for one session, although unconfirmed reports suggest there has been a marked improvement.

Inaugural winners Devonshire Colts will be hoping to go one better than last year when they kick off the Dudley Eve Trophy next Wednesday night.

Colts, who beat Somerset in the first competition in 1982-83, slipped to a 2-0 aggregate defeat to PHC in last year's final -- and that after beating the Zebras 3-2 to earn their place in that final.

They open proceedings this year in a double-header at Devonshire Rec with a game against North Village, whose 3-1 defeat of Somerset Trojans on Sunday, won them the final place in the tournament at the expense of Dandy Town, who could only draw 0-0 at Boulevard. The Blazers must look to overcome league leaders Vasco in the second match.

The winners of both matches and the losers of both matches then battle it out in another double-header four days later at White Hill Field.

The team triumphing in the match of the two winners progresses automatically to the two-leg final at Bernard Park on December 28 and Wellington Oval on New Year's Day. The team losing in that match takes on the winners of the two teams defeated in the first round at St David's Oval on Boxing Day afternoon to decide the other finalist.
