Village fight back after blunder by keeper Adams
Dwayne (Streaker) Adams' reputation as Bermuda's top goalkeeper was partially rescued by Elliott Jennings with 20 minutes left in this First Division match at Lord's yesterday.
Until that moment North Village had trailed 1-0 to a goal by George Smith that was virtually handed to Boulevard by Adams after he failed to clear a cross from a free kick by Neil Robinson that enabled the midfielder to scramble the ball home from close range after 39 minutes.
The normally competent Adams was the scapegoat during Thursday night's Martonmere Cup opener when similar failures led to two of Vasco's three goals.
Jennings' goal was a beauty and it was one of the few highlights of a match that saw both teams play with little imagination and technique when they got inside the penalty box.
Substitute Sean Dill sent a defence-splitting pass from the left that Jennings chased. He smartly brushed aside two desperate challenges from defenders and rifled a scorcher home from an angle as he entered the box.
While the goal led to a share of the points that Village were to eventually deserve they were forced to play catch-up most of the game after Boulevard got off to a fine start.
But despite pinning down Village for long spells, Boulevard were just as weak up front as their opponents and were seldom able to get any shots on target after Neil Robinson and Stevie Wade created openings galore down the right flank.
At the other end Damon Wade worked tirelessly but Village were clearly lacking up front where Nakia Smith, Jamel Smith and Richard Wilson all looked out of place.
Boulevard ended the half with the lead after Robinson's seemingly harmless chip from a free kick gave Adams trouble and the ball was allowed to drop to Smith who calmly knocked it home.
Village substituted Jamel Smith and Wilson to start the second half and the move saw them come into the game with more momentum.
Hard-working Boulevard skipper Dwight Warren sent two shots just wide of goal before Wade slammed a shot at goalkeeper Mitchell Steede.
After 60 minutes Village's Derek Bell put a penalty wide of the post, then Jennings followed up by sending another effort outside.
Their biggest blunder, however, came after 70 minutes when an out of touch Nakia Smith miskicked a Tankard cross from 12 yards.
Then just when Villge were showing signs of frustration Jennings came up with the equaliser.
