Village grab semis berth

North Village booked a Martonmere Cup semi-final date with holders Boulevard with this comeback effort at BAA Field on Saturday night, but it was far from pretty.

Such was the lack of inventive play in a match that could plainly be labelled "horrible'', it came as a great surprise these sides combined for four goals.

Keishon Smith put Colts ahead with their first real attack and then provided the cross for Tito Smith to temporarily give them the inside track to the semis.

Village hit back through substitute Nakia Smith and defender Kofi Dill and then withstood some degree of pressure at the end to eliminate the league champions.

Referee Esten Curtis dismissed Nakia Smith for a scything tackle on Sekai Waldron after 85 minutes, six minutes after he was cautioned for dissent.

Colts opened the scoring in the 19th minute when left back Keimon Lawrence's run and cross gave Keishon Smith the simple task of beating Gladwin Edness at the far post.

Needing a victory margin of two goals, or a high-scoring one-goal result to advance, Colts failed to take control of the match while Village likewise had problems linking up.

The second half began as the first with Edness holding on to a looping shot from Keishon Smith 90 seconds in and 15 minutes later saving at the feet of a hard-working Ray.

Village's best chance of the match fell to young Jemeiko Jennings in the 62nd minute, set up by uncle Elliott. But Hall showed why he is national squad material by advancing quickly to block the shot.

The Red Devils would pay dearly for this miss as Colts went two up a minute later with the best play of a sub-standard match.

Ray collected a pass from deep with his back to goal on the right, caught a cutting Keishon Smith in stride and the ensuing cross was neatly put away by Tito Smith's rarely used right foot.

Colts hardly had time to relax before Nakia Smith put Village back into the game in the 66th minute with a fierce header.

And five minutes later, they were level when Dill's intended cross from 30 yards out on the right with the outside of his boot caught Hall napping at the back post and went in off the underside of the bar.

Colts had the better of the remainder of play, a leaden-footed Edness making a meal of a Tito Smith shot with nine minutes left.

Then they brought on veteran Harrison Trott for Ray Jones in the 84th minute and he looked like stealing the show in the final minutes, but his well-timed header was clutched by Edness.
