Feature race of the day is expected to be event four in the 1.17-1.19.4 time bar in which Penny's Wildwood and Bermuda Warrior, driven by two junior drivers, Raymond Tucker and Junior DeSilva, come up against Grand Willy, driven by Johnnie Five.

Some 34 ponies are expected for 20 races, the first at 1.00 p.m.

SQUASH SQU Overseas contender Cathy Sullivan survived a close encounter as the international graded squash tournament got underway at the Devonshire courts on Wednesday. Canadian Sullivan eventually got past local player Julie Greaves 3-2.

In an all-local clash, Norman Furtado upended Tony Prentice 3-2, winning the deciding game 10-8, and grade A hopeful Julian Rose stamped his authority early to sweep Richard Brewer 3-0.

In keeping with tradition, an innovative 10.4 nautical mile customised course was set, using various islands around the Great Sound. The course included Pearl Island, Darrell's Island and Dagger Rocks, a complete loop of Grace Island, Five Star Island and back to the finish via Timlins Narrows.

Tonka , with Gary Venning at the helm, posted the fastest corrected time to win Class One (1:43.19) and Class Two (1:51.57). But Jonathan Custance-Baker's Gripper took Class Three with a two-second win over Reckless and Greg Vasic.

Claude Guay's Temptation led the Cruising Class in 2:03.23.

CRICKET CRI St.Brendan's beat Southampton Rangers by three wickets in a 35-over match on Sunday at Southampton Oval.

Rangers scored 110 for eight with St.Brendan's replying with 112 for seven in 26.4 overs.

Lee Raynor was top bat for Southampton with 32 not out while Carl Garzette and R.Todd both scored 12. Guest player Eldon Raynor led St. Brendan's bowling with two for 17 from seven overs while John Tucker scored the winning runs in his 11 not out.

Top bat for St. Brendan's was Perry Scott with 38, followed by Eldon Raynor and Richard Hill with 12 each. For Rangers, Carl Garzette had three for 20, Keith Wainwright two for 21 and Calix Todd two for nine.

KARATE MAT Instructor Kent Simmons of Bermuda Karate Institute placed second in fighting in forms and third in weapons in his division (men over 43) at the Battle of Boston Tournament on the weekend.

The event, held at the Bayside Exposition Centre, was organised by Joe Pina, a frequent visitor to Bermuda whose wife Barbara is Bermudian, and Pedro Xavier, who won the Bermuda Open Karate championships in 1991.

Also representing Bermuda was Andre (Slick) Joseph of the Zenjiryu Dojo, who placed second and third in the same divisions as Simmons in the men's 18-34 bracket.
