Wolves anxious to stop the rot
will strive to strengthen their grip on first place when the two teams meet in a Coca Cola First Division game at St. John's field tonight, starting at 8 p.m.
Town hold onto first place as a result of their superior goal difference over Southampton Rangers, both having earned 13 points from six matches. But the home side will want to solidify their position at the head of the table with a sound triumph over their struggling opponents.
Dandy Town enter the match coming off a comfortable 3-1 home victory over Somerset Trojans on Sunday -- a performance which will no doubt give them some momentum for tonight's clash.
In contrast Wolves are trying to arrest a slide down the table which has seen them slip from second to sixth in just over a month. Now they are hovering in the middle with 10 points from six matches -- three wins, a draw and two defeats.
Although Wolves' defence has looked inadequate on paper, it has surprisingly proved to be quite composed in practice. It is up front, where many chances have gone begging, that is of more immediate concern.
Nobody knows that more than key striker Ellington Weldon who joined the squad at the start of the season from Devonshire Colts.
Weldon and Nathan Webb remain a threat to defences but neither are playing near their best at the moment.
It was Weldon, though, who scored the winning goal in their 1-0 win over Southampton Rangers two weeks ago -- their last triumph. Since then they have lost 3-1 to Southampton in the Friendship Trophy and 2-1 to North Village in the league.
Weldon is fully aware that the pair have got to start putting the ball away.
"We've just got to hit the net, it's as simple as that. I have scored three goals this season, the chances have been coming but I've just not been finding goal enough,'' said the speedy forward.
"I expected it to be a bit difficult going to a new team and adjusting to new players around me and it has been. But I believe things are progressing, it's a matter of taking time to get to know each other and learning how we react to various situations.'' It remains to be seen if they will be allowed to find their touch against Town who they meet for the first time this season.
The odds point to a comfortable home win for the league leaders, however.
