Zebras climb out of relegation zone

Goal-hungry fans left the PHC stadium yesterday with their stomachs rumbling -- thanks to some stunning saves.

But Devonshire Colts' keeper Andre Hendrickson and his Zebras rival Ty Williams offered plenty of food for thought with their heroics.

Hendrickson pulled off one particularly great save in the dying moments of the first half.

He launched himself into the air to thwart a fierce 12-yard drive by Raynel Lightbourne.

Not to be outdone, Williams matched Hendrickson's excellence in the 65th minute.

He plucked the ball out of the air to rob Craig Smith, whose effort had appeared goal-bound.

The two keepers prevented what could have been a goal glut, as both sides got into excellent scoring positions.

In the end, a draw was a fair result with Leonard Hypolite's superb solo effort cancelling out Ottis Steede's 47th minute header.

The result left championship hopefuls Colts still in fourth place.

But it enabled PHC -- spurred by a 2-1 victory over Boulevard last weekend -- to leapfrog St. George's and move into the top six for the first time. The Zebras took the game to their opponents in the first 15 minutes, enjoying the best of the opening skirmishes.

Kenneth Mills and Raynel Lightbourne both went close shortly after the kick-off. Mills slammed the ball just left of Hendrickson's goal with a well-drilled shot.

And in the sixth minute, Hendrickson had to launch himself at Lightbourne's feet to gather the ball. Mills was again in the thick of things in the 11th minute after latching on to a Blenn Bean free kick.

His 15-yard drive whistled past the right of Hendrickson's post.

Colts' ambitions were helped by Quincy Aberdeen who was a menace to the Zebras' defence. In the 38th minute Aberdeen provided Colts with their best chance of the half.

He whipped the ball across to Weldon waiting in front of goal. The striker, however, directed his headed over the crossbar.

Just two minutes after the restart PHC struck with a simple goal from Steede, who headed home after the ball rebounded off the crossbar.

With both sides vying for midfield dominance, the outcome of the match was always in the balance.

Hypolite's 66th minute goal was just reward for a period of Colts' pressure.

The busy midfielder side-footed the ball into the left hand corner of Williams' net from about 22 yards.

Colts had a brief injury scare shortly aferwards when Weldon limped off the pitch. But the away side's fans breathed a sigh of relief when the striker rejoined the game minutes later.

Vic Ball spurned a great chance to clinch the afternoon for Colts in the 73rd minute. He received the ball after a passing movement between Derek Wright and Anthony Wilson, but he spooned the ball well over the bar from just yards out.
