Zuill sends Colts into fourth straight final
Devonshire Colts 3 Wolves 2 Super sub Aljame Zuill headed Devonshire Colts into the FA Cup final with a 78th minute winner that floored Wolves yesterday.
Normally a starter but benched in favour of college student Damon Ming, Zuill made the most of his role off the bench, replacing an injured Marvin Belboda.
With Wolves gaining in confidence after twice coming back from a goal down, Zuill silenced his team's opponents for good, rising high between two defenders to nod home a right-wing cross from Jermaine Belboda.
The result earned Colts their fourth consecutive FA Cup final and third trip to the `Final Two' this season, having contested -- and lost -- both the Martonmere Cup and Dudley Eve Trophy earlier.
After a half hour of nondescript soccer, the match exploded into life, with Marvin Belboda producing a masterful piece of dribbling that ripped the Wolves defence to shreds.
Gaining possession near the half-line, the livewire forward embarked on a mazy run along the left flank that first left three defenders departed in his wake and ended with the ball deposited in the low left corner.
However, if Colts thought this to be the start of something grand they were mistaken, as six minutes later Shaki Crockwell had Wolves back on level terms, scrambling home a reply as Colts were slow to clear a Mark Ray free kick.
Colts' advantage was restored two minutes prior to the interval, and again it was Belboda who supplied the finishing touch.
Clevon Hill chipped in a seemingly harmless cross from the left which somehow eluded the clutches of goalkeeper Michael Higgs, presenting Belboda the simplest of tasks to tap in at the far post.
The second half saw Colts come close to increasing the lead to two goals, as they constructed a fine attacking move after 56 minutes, Belboda releasing Keenan Burchall down the right side from where his cross was firmly met by Hill. Higgs though was equal to the task, denying a sure goal.
Thus inspired, Wolves showed that they too could take from the textbook onto the pitch. Given room on the left Jared Peniston sought and found an onrushing Crockwell at the back post, the latter's first-time volley giving Kevin Bean no chance.
Play continued to sway back and forth with extra-time appearing a certainty, until Zuill stepped in to settle matters.
"We finished today, although I feel our ratio still needs to come up,'' said Colts captain Shannon Burgess afterwards. "In the first half we got the better of them but we didn't put them away and Wolves are a team that will fight to the end.
"They didn't get many chances, but those they got they put away and we almost paid for it at the end. But Aljame finished at the end and Marvin's efforts in the beginning put us on our way and we're happy for the result.''
