A four-member Bermuda junior squash team get the chance to swing their racquets Down Under when they travel to New Zealand next month.
Jean-Paul Dyer, Nick Kyme and brothers Brian and David Dodwell will carry the Island's banner in the land of the Kiwi during the World Junior Squash Championships.
Thirteen-year-old Kyme, the youngest on the team -- and possibly the entire tournament -- conversely is its most experienced member having taken part as the same event two years ago in Hong Kong.
He along with David Dodwell (18), who will captain the team, are viewed as the lynch-pins, while Dyer is the number three player and the other Dodwell travels as reserve.
Bermuda go into the competition ranked 22nd out of the 29 nations entered, even though the team placed 24th in Hong Kong.
Not much chance is given Bermuda against the likes of powerhouses such as Australia, England, Canada or Egypt, however, team manager and current coach Denise Kyme said that winning was not the overriding goal set forth.
"We're not going to come close to some of those teams,'' said Kyme, who recently helped Bermuda capture the Rose Bowl as a key member of the female squad. "The tournament is a lot like a festival and really encourages participation above all.
"We would hope to win one match, but it is a strong field and we're mostly looking for them to get experience. It's a tremendous opportunity for them.
The next few weeks will see the quartet upgrading their conditioning with thrice weekly training sessions combined with occasional matches against senior club players.
The five-member contingent leaves on July 27 for the July 31- August 13 event.
