can't be a sports fan after all.

From the dedicated supporter to the armchair critic there is a wide range of sports to follow this weekend, both local and overseas.

No doubt the major sporting event will be the World Cup which kicked off last night in the United States and will run through to the final on July 17. Most of the matches will be covered on local television (Ch. 2/7).

There is plenty of golf to satisfy that sport's big following, from the Bermuda Amateur Stroke Play Championships at Port Royal (the men began yesterday and the women today and both finish on Monday) to the US Open in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, which will be carried on ABC TV this weekend.

Other major sporting events overseas include the NBA finals between Houston Rockets and New York Knicks (game five was last night and game six is scheduled for tomorrow evening on VSB-4 and Cable-6.

Coverage of Wimbledon tennis begins on Monday on HBO, and there is also local tennis with the Pomander Gate.

Water sports will dominate the local front over the next few days with the first boats in the Newport to Bermuda race expected off St. David's by Tuesday.

On Monday the 50th Long Distance Comet Race will take place from St. George's to Somerset (11 a.m. start), as defending champion Stevie Dickinson bids for a 10th title.

The Bermuda National Swimming Championships began last night at the BASA pool and will continue today and tomorrow. Powerboat racing is scheduled for Ferry Reach tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.

League cricket takes a break for the six-match Hyderabad Blues tour which begins with matches tomorrow and Monday against St. George's and Somerset Cup Match Selects. The matches will be held at Wellington Oval tomorrow and Somerset on Monday, both starting at 12 noon.

There is also a Central Counties match today between Western Stars and Social Club.

Crowds converging on Somerset for the finish of the comet race can either then take in the cricket match at Somerset Cricket Club or stay on the water for the fitted dinghy racing which is scheduled for Mangrove Bay at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The dinghies will also compete tomorrow at Mangrove Bay starting at 1 p.m.

Other local sports include the Athletic Club 5-K tomorrow, starting and finishing at Victoria Park and a host of softball matches at Bernard Park.
