A royal drubbing
A six-goal second-half explosion by Social Club spurred the Bluebirds on to a 7-1 victory and sent Port Royal tumbling out of the Second Division Shield competition in the curtain-raiser at Somerset Cricket Club last night.
With only a 44th-minute penalty by Troy Lewis to show for their territorial advantage in the first half Social Club came out for the second determined to wipe their opponents off the pitch...and did they ever.
Rembert Hill, always a bother with his speed up front, served up two goals while Shawn Laws, Troy Saunders and substitute Randy Spence each had one apiece.
The first half was particularly frustrating for Social as they were continually thwarted more by their own misgivings rather than by their opponents.
In the fifth minute, Saunders should have opened the scoring when he wasted a fine through ball by Troy Darrell, which beat the offside trap, placing his effort wide of the mark.
Larry Darrell followed up with a miss of his own when well placed 17 yards away with the goal open.
Finally breaking the deadlock was Hill as he found the ball at his feet 18 yards out and while his first shot was blocked by Hayward his second was handled inside the penalty area by Brian Brangman. It was then left to Lewis to place his spot-kick past low Hayward into the left-hand corner.
Port Royal were stunned early following the break by two goals in quick succession by Saunders and Hill coming in the 46th and 47th minutes.
Saunders was able to get on the end of a Larry Darrell corner and force the ball over the line despite a challenge from the 'keeper and Hill scored his on a breakaway that saw him round Hayward before blasting into an empty net.
Troy Darrell blasted miserably over the top from 12 yards in the 52nd minute, but Spence would show him the proper finishing technique when he slammed home a left-footed drive three minutes later to make it 4-0.
The Hamilton side were reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Franklyn Francis for swearing in the 64th minute.
Nevertheless, Social Club marched on. Saunders was clinical in his execution, driving in a 72nd-minute rocket and Hill got his second moments later on yet another solo run.
Nakia Smith converted a penalty for Port Royal in the 83rd minute but Social Club had the last say as substitute Melvin Bowen scored a minute from time.
