Absent Levon leaves Village in the lurch
Skipper Mike Levon left North Village in the lurch as they crashed to a heavy defeat against resurgent Jamaican Association in Sunday's only Commercial Cricket League match.
Levon, who has been juggling a tennis and cricket schedule in recent weeks, left Shelly Bay between innings as Village prepared to reply to Jamaican Association's challenging total of 194 for five, highlighted by a second successive half century from skipper Norman Godwin.
Levon, who went down in three sets to Randy Bean in the Colonial Open tournament at Pomander Gate, promised team-mates he would return to Shelly Bay. But he failed to show up as Village's 10 men succumbed to a 128-run defeat at 7.45 p.m. with under five overs remaining.
A week ago Levon bowled seven overs in the match against Watford Sports Club at Warwick Secondary, left to play tennis and returned later to hit 28 to help Village secure a draw.
It was Jamaican Association's second win in a row after starting the season with three defeats.
Regular skipper Wendell Lindsay, sidelined on Sunday by a recurrence of knee trouble, said yesterday: "The team was disappointed Levon didn't return. We were less than four overs away from forcing a draw.'' Opener Godwin followed up his 95 the previous week in an emphatic win against West End Warriors at Garrison Field by hitting a six and three fours in his 66, sharing an opening partnership of 73 with Mike Young, who made 29 against his former team-mates after twice being dropped before scoring. Although Ian Coke went for a duck the innings continued to prosper and Michael Campbell, also dropped twice before getting off the mark, and David Gibbs teamed up to lash 87 runs off the last 12 overs.
Campbell hit two boundaries in his 40 while Gibbs, run out off the final ball, made 29. Former Young Men's Social Club player Kevin Lapsley was the pick of the Village attack with two for 23 from four overs.
Dion Ball (8) and Haile Melakot (11) put on 25 for the first wicket but once they were parted there was a clatter of wickets as Village, battling for a draw, tumbled to 66 all out in the 38th over. Campbell followed up his useful knock with figures of three for 11 from 10.2 overs, four of them maidens.
Lapsley, batting at number five, finished unbeaten on 13 while Young took two for 12.
Said Jamaican Association team spokesman Glenmore Barrett: "The victory was a good boost to our morale. We started the season with three defeats but we feel much better now. There's much more to come from us.'' North Village will hold a training session at Nationals tomorrow (6.00) and another at the same venue next Thursday.
