All black romp to record victory

Like schoolyard bullies making off with the marbles of their smaller, fellow pupils, the bigger and stronger New Zealand team bounced the Europeans all around the pitch and took the points in this no-contest.

It was announced to the crowd during this mismatch that the New Zealanders were wearing the same style of strip worn by the original All Blacks 100 years ago.

But a caveman's outfit would have been more appropriate, so physically intimidating were their players.

It would be pointless describing all of New Zealand's scoring plays individually because they were basically all the same.

An All Black would pick up the ball, which would be passed deftly a couple of times to team-mates who were always in support and whoever's turn it was would dash with power and speed over the European try line and place down the ball.

Tackling from the Europeans was virtually non-existent as time and again the All Blacks shrugged off challenges with what amounted to little more than a flick of the hand.

But perhaps not much should be expected from a team who are, to say the least, on the small side. One of their members, Italian Evelino Alo, looked well shy of five foot.

It could also be too hopeful to expect much team spirit and fight from a composite team made up of such diverse nationalities as French, Italians, Dutch, Portuguese and Spaniards.

Whatever the case, matches of this nature which are, to all intents and purposes, over within a few minutes of kick-off do little to enhance the image or enjoyment of the fifth World Rugby Classic and a rethink by organisers is in order.

The New Zealanders, who were leading 50-0 at half-time, still remain undefeated in this, their fourth Classic tournament and look set to romp away with the title again. For the record, the All Blacks' tries were scored by Gary Cunningham (three), Bruce Hemara (three), John Boe (two), Bill Osborne (two), Fred Woodman, Jock Ross, David Loveridge, Murray Watts, Gary Seear and Alan Dawson. They did not take conversions.

Europe's sole try, the first of the second half, was scored by Portugal's Manuel Costa.

An exhibition match on Saturday will pit a Lisbon team against Old Bermuda at 6.30 p.m. The fixture is designed to allow the Portuguese on the Island to become more involved in the Classic. After the match traditional Portuguese food will be served.

KIWI DOMINATION -- New Zealand look like repeating their one-team act of the past three years.
