SWIMMING SW William Massey, tipped as a medal contender by coach Richard Goodman prior to the CISC Age Group Championships in Trinidad, lived up to expectations when he won a silver on the final night of competition.

The 12-year-old set a new Bermuda age group record in the 50 metres freestyle coming home in second in a time of 27.43.

The accomplishment by Massey enabled the 16-member team to return home with three medals, after Tiffany Gosling won silver and bronze medals in the 200 and 100 metres backstroke.

Also on the final night, the 4x100 medley relay team of Massey (butterfly), Craig Ferguson (backstroke), Trevor Nelson (breaststroke) and Nicholas van de Weg (freestyle) placed fourth in a time of five minutes, 23.18 seconds.

"This competition improves every year,'' said coach Goodman yesterday. "The quality keeps getting higher and higher.'' Goodman, who pointed to Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Netherland Antilles and Dominican Republic as the top countries, was satisfied with the medal haul by Bermuda, pointing out that Bermuda had a record 18 finalists setting one national record and five new age group records.

"We couldn't quite turn finals to medals,'' said the coach. "But to reach the finals alone was quite a tremendous achievement. They gave it everything they had.''
