All-Stars keep cup hopes alive
Commercial Division's Group B, Devonshire Colts All-Stars managed to keep their season alive with an upset win on Saturday at BAA Field.
All-Stars' narrow 1-0 victory over Mariners moved them into the semi-finals of the Commercial Division KO Cup while also allowing them revenge over the side who beat them 5-4 a week previously, sending them tumbling to the lower division.
It took a late second half strike by Marvin Campbell to settle the issue. A goalkeeping blunder presented Campbell with the opportunity at an open goal and the midfielder made no mistake.
Mariners came close on numerous occasions in the dying stages as they embarked on an all out search for the equaliser but it was not to be.
The second affair at BAA was even closer as penalties were required to separate Forties and Lobster Pot after regulation time ended 1-1.
Forties, like All-Stars destined for life in the Group B after struggling to a 1-2-15 record that left them anchored at the foot of Group A, showed nerves of steel putting away all five of their spot kicks while Pot managed to convert just three.
Earlier Forties led 1-0 at the interval on account of a Ken Anderson tally.
Mike Evans levelled matters with a second half penalty for Pot.
Fire Service, carrying the Group B banner, continued their march towards the final with a 2-0 defeat of fading St. George's All-Stars at St. John's Field.
The firemen struck once in each half, with Mike Rawlins notching the first and Ralph Scott the second.
Group A league champions BAA Wanderers disposed of Island Rangers 2-0 on account of two second half goals from Stuart Drake and Steve Irvine.
