Appeal success opens the door for Rangers
title now that they have been confirmed as Western Counties champions for today's final against Warwick at White Hill Field (11.00 a.m.).
Rangers were beaten by PHC in the last round but protested on the grounds that PHC's captain James Pace was ineligible, having not played two full seasons with the club. Initially that protest was overturned but the saga took another unexpected twist on Wednesday night when Rangers were finally declared the winners.
That may not be the end of it from PHC's standpoint as it is understood they have sought legal advice on the matter.
Now, if Rangers get by Warwick today they will be confirmed as Western Counties champions for the season which qualifies them to represent the county in the Champion of Champions later this month against St. David's and Western Stars.
If Rangers made the mistake of taking PHC too lightly in the last round, certainly they won't be undestimating Warwick even though they have the second worst record in the league.
But with guest players Sammy Robinson and Mark Ray in their team, Warwick's level of play could rise to a high enough level to cause the champions some problems.
Rangers close out their league season tomorrow when they take on Flatts at Devonshire Rec. They clinched the league last weekend with victory over St.
David's and will be looking to stretch their unbeaten league run to 13 games since the opening day of the season.
Western Stars, who lost the points to PHC at the start fo the season for not securing a field for their home match, were set back by that decision and now have to settle for second place. They travel to Wellington Oval to meet Cleveland, the only team to beat Rangers in the league.
Three other teams will battle for the two remaining Camel Cup places. Bailey's Bay should close out their season with victory over Somerset Bridge at White Hill while St. George's and St. David's, who have a game in hand over Bay (they meet each other next Saturday) also know the importance of victories tomorrow. St. George's are away to PHC while St. David's face a tougher match, at home to Willow Cuts.
