Astwood in fight to get fit

pre-season friendly matches against English Premier League club Everton and Spanish top-flight side Athletic Bilbao.

The 18-year-old Bermuda national team and PHC striker is undergoing trials with the English First Division club, but has been booked into a health clinic in London for specialist treatment after tearing a leg muscle.

Astwood has played just 52 minutes so far for Preston during last Monday's friendly match at Burscough, before the injury forced him to go off.

London-based agent Barry McIntosh, who helped Astwood get his chance at Preston, said: "Steve is out of the frame at the moment after he tore a muscle. But once he is fully fit, then I'm hoping Preston will make a decision one way or the other.

"If another offer comes in I would have to consider it, but we would definitely like to do business with Preston, because Steve likes it here.'' McIntosh said three other First Division clubs -- Fulham, Watford and Queen's Park Rangers -- had also expressed interest in Astwood.

Astwood's strike partner in Bermuda's World Cup and Olympic teams Rohaan Simons is also heading to Preston for trials.

And the 23-year-old Southampton Rangers striker has a lot to live up to after being described in Preston's local newspaper, The Lancashire Evening Post , as `Bermuda's Ian Wright'.

Agent McIntosh told the newspaper: "I've spoken to Preston about Rohaan and they're very keen to have a look at him.

"Rohaan is very, very quick and just loves scoring. He is a prolific scorer and a lot of people back home have compared him to a young Ian Wright.'' In England, such an accolade is sure to grab attention.

Wright was this month awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), after a glittering career in which he scored 185 goals for Arsenal, smashing the Cliff Bastin's long-standing club record.

"There has been a tremendous amount of interest in Rohaan because of his goalscoring exploits,'' added McIntosh. "Several clubs in England, Spain and Italy have asked me about him -- but Preston will see him first.'' Tokia Russell went to Preston with Astwood, but was released by last season's Second Division champions and is now training with Second Division Luton Town.

Russell is expected to be involved in a friendly match at Welling United tonight, along with another Bermuda national team player, Tommy Carter.

Also training at Luton are two more Bermudians, North Village's Marlon Dill and Dandy Town's Raymond Beach.
