Athletes chase qualifying standards

Stadium is shaping up to be an exciting event with some of Bermuda's most outstanding athletes setting out to meet qualifying standards for the CAC Championships.

The championships will be held in late July in Guatamala.

Set to compete is sprinter and long jumper Devon Bean who was the Junior College Athlete of the Year in California where he is studying at Long Beach Junior College. Bean has a best leap of 24-feet-two-inches in the long jump and is expected to be challenged by Atiba Tucker and Donte Hunt who have jumped 23'10'' and 23'07'' respectively.

In the middle distance Marco Perinchief, Michael Donawa and Garon Wilkinson who have all gone under two minutes in the 800 metres should provide an exciting race while the DJ Williams Mile, the feature event of the two-day meet, could see Donawa going up against the experienced Mike Watson and Kavin Smith. Officials are still awaiting confirmation from Smith who recently competed abroad.

Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nicky Saunders has switched his event from high jump to the 400 metre hurdles and he will have his sights set on reaching the qualifying mark in this event.

In the high jump Steven Woodley will be aiming for new heights but Rohaan Simons, his main rival, will not be present as he is still abroad in school.

In the women, Gina Cann, Jarita Dill and possibly also Jennifer Smith will battle in the middle distances, with Cann also likely to compete in the 800 as well as the 400 metres.

Competition starts at 6.30 this evening and at 6.00 tomorrow and athletes are asked to be at the stadium by 5.30 both days.

On Saturday evening in St. George's an Olympic Day fun run will be held starting at 7 p.m. at King's Square. Olympic Day will be observed around the world this weekend and the community is invivted to participate.

There will be no entry fee, but there will be spot prizes and tee shirts for both the runners and walkers. A special invitation is being extended to past Olympians to partcipate in the run which will take the participants past Tobacco Bay and Fort St Catherine before returning to King's Square.
