Lewis was sent home from Jamaica earlier this week following a row with Under-23 coach Mark Trott.

But last night the 21-year-old utility player accused both Trott and technical director Burkhard Ziese of provoking him throughout his stay in the Caribbean.

The Devonshire Colts player said Trott and Ziese were overly critical of the players and believed their constant ridiculing led to disharmony.

"When Mr. Trott claimed that team morale was high, it probably was only because of the victory over Canada on Sunday and nothing else,'' said Lewis who arrived home from Jamaica yesterday afternoon.

During an interview with The Royal Gazette Lewis said he would not answer any questions on the incident which led to the disciplinary action, but instead issued a prepared statement.

Lewis said he encountered a problem with the coaches from the outset and noted that the friction increased after he was named as one of four players in charge of equipment.

What apparently irritated Lewis most was the manner in which he was addressed by Ziese and Trott.

Lewis' statement read: "When we arrived in Jamaica, after sacrificing three weeks of pay from my job, it seemed as if I had made the wrong decision. It all started on the second day when I was told that I was in charge of the balls for the day.

"I was in a hurry to get ready for training and when I forgot to get the balls, it all started. I got on the bus and Ziese, who has no respect for anyone, started to shout at me in the presence of everybody. He has a daughter and I know he doesn't talk to her like that, so why me, I thought.

"As the days went by there was nothing but tension between Ziese, Trott and me. On game day (Sunday) I took the equipment to the bus and having felt I had done enough, and since three others were helping, I watched as they unloaded the equipment and put it onto the bus.

"As I stood watching, Trott asked if I had a problem, and I replied `yes, it's you'. Then he started to point to the ground and said, `come here boy, come here now'.

"Since I was already frustrated for being treated like an equipment persona and not one of the players, his comments made me feel like a little boy and as though they were running a summer day camp for kids.

"I was never summoned to a disciplinary meeting, I was simply told that I would be sent home the next day.

"I conducted myself in a responsible manner and consider myself a mature individual. The entire incident should have been handled much better than it was.'' A Devonshire Colts official said yesterday it was "totally out of character'' for Lewis to be rude and that the club were anxious to obtain further information about the incident.

When pressed for his reaction to additional disciplinary action, Lewis said: "If they take any futher disciplinary action I will quit playing, especially at an international level. As of now I still have a strong desire to represent my country.'' Marvin Lewis
