Barbados and Antilles throw caution to wind
Netherlands Antilles and Barbados, forced to play out the series, completed their participation at the Under-17 World Cup Qualifying Tournament with an entertaining 2-2 draw last night.
With neither having a shot at the next round, both teams threw caution to the wind, unveiling 90 minutes of free-flowing soccer.
The first half saw Netherlands Antilles survive an early burst from Barbados and take a 34th minute lead when front-man Kleimoedig seized on indecision among the Barbados defence to nip in and force the ball past goalkeeper Sheldon Parsons.
The lead was short-lived, as Barbados stormed back, earning a free-kick at the top of the penalty area and Kimar Griffith stepped up to score the equaliser, his kick taking a deflection off the defensive wall and looping over De Wolff.
Kleimoedig remained the spark in the second half, however it was Barbados who took the lead, Marcus Marshall doing well to slide home a left-wing cross from substitute Dwayne Marshall in the 78th minute.
It appeared the goal would be enough to secure victory, that is until a period of intense pressure in the dying stages yielded success for Netherlands Antilles, Constancia following up at the far post to bury the rebound from a Kleimoedig shot that Parsons did well to get his hands on.
Both countries ended the tournament on one point, with Netherlands Antilles securing third by virtue of better goal difference.
