Bascome books Trojans' final spot
After Rodney Bascome shot Martonmere Cup champions Somerset ahead for the first time four minutes into the second period of extra time, the Trojans had goalkeeper Winslow Williams to thank for a couple of important saves in this semifinal clash last night at PHC Stadium.
Randy Simmons crossed from the right and when the ball was not cleared Bascome poked the ball over the line from close range for what turned out to be the winner.
After that Town attacked frantically in a bid to snatch an equaliser and came close to doing so when a shot from Wayne Campbell was tipped over the bar two minutes from the end.
The game was in the dying moments when sub Lionel Cann got another chance to keep Town in the game. This time a neat chip from Walter Musson put him behind the defence inside the box and his left-foot shot produced another brilliant save from Williams.
It was Town who scored first in this evenly balanced match in the 10th minute when the ball was knocked forward by defender Campbell and Musson pounced to drive a fierce left-foot volley past the helpless Williams from the left side of the penalty box.
Somerset did not take long to produce the equaliser. It came via the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after midfielder Reggie Tucker was fouled by Ross Parsons and Randy Simmons beat Manders with his spot-kick.
Kelly Simmons threatened with two free kicks, the first in the 41st minute, which was headed away by Campbell and the second five minutes into the second half, which Bascome met only to glance his header past the far post from in front of goal.
Bascome wasted a good chance in the 69th minute when the ball was lobbed over the Town defence by Shannon Morrissey and Bascome side-footed a first-time shot from inside the box wide when with just Manders to beat.
The catalogue of wasted chances began in this period as Somerset sub Curtis Grant delayed a shot inside the area when he had just the 'keeper to beat.
Grant almost made up for that miss in the fifth minute of extra time when he turned inside the box and drove a hard shot past the far post.
Possibly the best chance of the match fell to Kelly Simmons a minute later when he raced for goal on a breakaway but put his effort wide of the near post as Manders narrowed the angle.
